This journal is a work in process designed to capture the essence of Dr. George Washington Carver's life and how his legacy contributes to the environmental movement today. His pioneering efforts in science and engineering were unique in that he contributed all of his success to his faith. Much has been unnoticed about this icon we hope this journal will reveal. The aim is to bring a renewed interest in the campaign for a national holiday in his honor.
2. A letter from Bro. Greenup
When indecisive situations emerge vigilance takes control and only then will
insurmountable problems become solvable expectations.
Dr. George Washington Carver exemplifies that overwhelming inner strength to command
his destiny. He demonstrated that in the mist of unrelenting odds such as super storms,
massacres and world wide fiscal chaos, human genius plus the love for humanity will
prevail.
Dr. Carver’s humble beginning’s reflects that of the many poor and needy among us. His
life brings hope and reaffirms to many that success is made with mental focus and a strong
devoted faith. A product of chattel slavery he found freedom not only with the help of his
loving slave family but by meeting the challenges of Jim Crow with the power of
education. As a young lad he traveled distances unheard of and with fearlessness he
submitted to rejection accepting it as a call to a higher purpose.
Chronicled as one of if not the greatest scientist of our time, many of his talents as an artist,
musician and seminarian go unnoticed. Questions arise in our generation, such as, why was
his life relegated only to the peanut? Was there a form of information suppression
regarding his accomplishments? Why was he not nominated and awarded the Nobel Prize
for his scientific achievements? Finally, why is there a day recognized for him but not a
national holiday?
Shroud with a form of mysticism he moved as a saint healing and bringing many out of
social and economic bondage. He did not provide food he produced environments to grow
it. He did not exploit the land he learned how to work with it and produce more. This is a
story one would fully disclose within multiple lifetimes, however with today’s technology
we can cut that time in half.
Please join the Carver Memorial Planning Board in taking part in the monumental task of
answering these questions. We welcome your voice in the movement to highlight the great
life and legacy of Dr. George Washington Carver and give him tribute with a national
holiday.
