Kite Runner Book Trailer
by Khaled Hosseini
The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely
friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his
father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted
novel set in a country that is in the process of being
destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of
betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an
exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their
love, their sacrifices, their lies.
A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told
against the devastating backdrop of the history of
Afghanistan over the last thirty years, The Kite Runner is
an unusual and powerful novel that has become a
beloved, one-of-a-kind classic.
A Thousand Splendid Suns Book Trailer
Title & Author Summary
by Khaled Hosseini
A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty
years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship,
faith, and the salvation to be found in love.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and
family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by
war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers
around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come
to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to
each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own
lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and
suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move
her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is
love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting,
heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely
friendship, and an indestructible love.
Outcasts United Book Trailer
by Warren St. John
The extraordinary tale of a refugee youth soccer team and the transformation
of a small American town
Clarkston, Georgia, was a typical Southern town until it was designated a
refugee settlement center in the 1990s, becoming the first American home for
scores of families in flight from the world’s war zones—from Liberia and
Sudan to Iraq and Afghanistan. Suddenly Clarkston’s streets were filled with
women wearing the hijab, the smells of cumin and curry, and kids of all colors
playing soccer in any open space they could find. The town also became home
to Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman who founded a
youth soccer team to unify Clarkston’s refugee children and keep them off the
streets. These kids named themselves the Fugees.
Set against the backdrop of an American town that without its consent had
become a vast social experiment, Outcasts United follows a pivotal season in
the life of the Fugees and their charismatic coach. Warren St. John documents
the lives of a diverse group of young people as they miraculously coalesce
into a band of brothers, while also drawing a fascinating portrait of a fading
American town struggling to accommodate its new arrivals. At the center of
the story is fiery Coach Luma, who relentlessly drives her players to success
on the soccer field while holding together their lives—and the lives of their
families—in the face of a series of daunting challenges.
The Promise of a Pencil Book Trailer
by Adam Braun
The riveting story of how a young man turned $25 into more than
200 schools around the world and the guiding steps anyone can
take to lead a successful and significant life.
Adam Braun began working summers at hedge funds when he
was just sixteen years old, sprinting down the path to a
successful Wall Street career. But while traveling he met a young
boy begging on the streets of India, who after being asked what
he wanted most in the world, simply answered, “A pencil.” This
small request led to a staggering series of events that took Braun
backpacking through dozens of countries before eventually
leaving one of the world’s most prestigious jobs to found Pencils
of Promise, the organization he started with just $25 that has
since built more than 200 schools around the world.
Little Princes Book Trailer
By Connor Grennan
About to turn 30, Conor Grennan planned a year-long trip around the world. He started his trip
with a three-month stint volunteering in the Little Princes Orphanage in war-torn Nepal. What
was supposed to be just a three-month experience changed Conor’s life, and the lives of
countless others. While playing on the roof of the orphanage, Conor was approached by a
woman who would turn out to be the mother of two of the wards. Over hours of conversations
with her, Conor learned the truth about the kids he’d come to love. Many of the little princes
were not orphans but rather had been taken from their homes and families by child traffickers.
In addition to losing two of her boys, this woman, while under the control of a human
trafficker, was doing her best to keep seven other terrified kids alive in her mud hut. Conor’s
life changed in those moments, as he decided to commit himself to these kids. After securing
spots in an orphanage for all seven and arranging for an excellent local staff to run the Little
Princes orphanage, Conor escaped Nepal, one day before revolution erupted in Kathmandu,
with the King’s police shooting protestors in the streets.
After arriving home, Conor received a devastating email reporting that the seven kids had
disappeared, snatched once again by the same trafficker. Soon he was back in Kathmandu,
riding through the chaotic streets on the back of a local’s motorcycle, searching for his kids,
seven needles in a corrupt haystack. And that is where Conor’s story begins.
Conor pledged to not only start a new orphanage for these seven but to start an entire new
program dedicated to reuniting kids with their lost families in remote villages in the Nepalese
hills, a four-day walk at best through war-torn precincts with no roads.
Conor’s organization, Next Generation Nepal, has reconnected almost 300 families with
children they feared were lost to them forever. Website about the book.
I Am Malala Book Trailer
By Malala Yousafzai
When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke
out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an
education.
On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the
ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the
bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.
Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary
journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United
Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful
protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.
I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism,
of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner,
championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of
brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that
prizes sons.
I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to
inspire change in the world.
Kabul Beauty School Book Trailer
by Deborah Rodriguez
Soon after the fall of the Taliban, in 2001, Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as part of a
group offering humanitarian aid to this war-torn nation. Surrounded by men and women whose
skills–as doctors, nurses, and therapists–seemed eminently more practical than her own,
Rodriguez, a hairdresser and mother of two from Michigan, despaired of being of any real use.
Yet she soon found she had a gift for befriending Afghans, and once her profession became
known she was eagerly sought out by Westerners desperate for a good haircut and by Afghan
women, who have a long and proud tradition of running their own beauty salons. Thus an idea
was born.
With the help of corporate and international sponsors, the Kabul Beauty School welcomed its
first class in 2003. Well meaning but sometimes brazen, Rodriguez stumbled through language
barriers, overstepped cultural customs, and constantly juggled the challenges of a postwar
nation even as she learned how to empower her students to become their families’
breadwinners by learning the fundamentals of coloring techniques, haircutting, and makeup.
Yet within the small haven of the beauty school, the line between teacher and student quickly
blurred as these vibrant women shared with Rodriguez their stories and their hearts: the
newlywed who faked her virginity on her wedding night, the twelve-year-old bride sold into
marriage to pay her family’s debts, the Taliban member’s wife who pursued her training
despite her husband’s constant beatings. Through these and other stories, Rodriguez found
the strength to leave her own unhealthy marriage and allow herself to love again, Afghan style.
With warmth and humor, Rodriguez details the lushness of a seemingly desolate region and
reveals the magnificence behind the burqa. Kabul Beauty School is a remarkable tale of an
extraordinary community of women who come together and learn the arts of perms, friendship,
and freedom.
Hidden Girl Book Trailer
An inspiring and compelling memoir from a young woman who lost her
childhood to slavery—and built a new life grounded in determination and
justice.
Shyima Hall was born in Egypt on September 29, 1989, the seventh
child of desperately poor parents. When she was eight, her parents sold
her into slavery. Shyima then moved two hours away to Egypt’s capitol
city of Cairo to live with a wealthy family and serve them eighteen hours
a day, seven days a week. When she was ten, her captors moved to
Orange County, California, and smuggled Shyima with them. Two years
later, an anonymous call from a neighbor brought about the end of
Shyima’s servitude—but her journey to true freedom was far from over.
A volunteer at her local police department since she was a teenager,
Shyima is passionate about helping to rescue others who are in
bondage. Now a US citizen, she regularly speaks out about human
trafficking and intends to one day become an immigration officer. In
Hidden Girl, Shyima candidly reveals how she overcame her harrowing
circumstances and brings vital awareness to a timely and relevant topic.

  • 4. Kite Runner Book Trailer by Khaled Hosseini The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies. A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told against the devastating backdrop of the history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years, The Kite Runner is an unusual and powerful novel that has become a beloved, one-of-a-kind classic.
  • 5. A Thousand Splendid Suns Book Trailer Title & Author Summary by Khaled Hosseini A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love. Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.
  • 6. Outcasts United Book Trailer by Warren St. John The extraordinary tale of a refugee youth soccer team and the transformation of a small American town Clarkston, Georgia, was a typical Southern town until it was designated a refugee settlement center in the 1990s, becoming the first American home for scores of families in flight from the world’s war zones—from Liberia and Sudan to Iraq and Afghanistan. Suddenly Clarkston’s streets were filled with women wearing the hijab, the smells of cumin and curry, and kids of all colors playing soccer in any open space they could find. The town also became home to Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman who founded a youth soccer team to unify Clarkston’s refugee children and keep them off the streets. These kids named themselves the Fugees. Set against the backdrop of an American town that without its consent had become a vast social experiment, Outcasts United follows a pivotal season in the life of the Fugees and their charismatic coach. Warren St. John documents the lives of a diverse group of young people as they miraculously coalesce into a band of brothers, while also drawing a fascinating portrait of a fading American town struggling to accommodate its new arrivals. At the center of the story is fiery Coach Luma, who relentlessly drives her players to success on the soccer field while holding together their lives—and the lives of their families—in the face of a series of daunting challenges.

  • 8. Little Princes Book Trailer By Connor Grennan About to turn 30, Conor Grennan planned a year-long trip around the world. He started his trip with a three-month stint volunteering in the Little Princes Orphanage in war-torn Nepal. What was supposed to be just a three-month experience changed Conor’s life, and the lives of countless others. While playing on the roof of the orphanage, Conor was approached by a woman who would turn out to be the mother of two of the wards. Over hours of conversations with her, Conor learned the truth about the kids he’d come to love. Many of the little princes were not orphans but rather had been taken from their homes and families by child traffickers. In addition to losing two of her boys, this woman, while under the control of a human trafficker, was doing her best to keep seven other terrified kids alive in her mud hut. Conor’s life changed in those moments, as he decided to commit himself to these kids. After securing spots in an orphanage for all seven and arranging for an excellent local staff to run the Little Princes orphanage, Conor escaped Nepal, one day before revolution erupted in Kathmandu, with the King’s police shooting protestors in the streets. After arriving home, Conor received a devastating email reporting that the seven kids had disappeared, snatched once again by the same trafficker. Soon he was back in Kathmandu, riding through the chaotic streets on the back of a local’s motorcycle, searching for his kids, seven needles in a corrupt haystack. And that is where Conor’s story begins. Conor pledged to not only start a new orphanage for these seven but to start an entire new program dedicated to reuniting kids with their lost families in remote villages in the Nepalese hills, a four-day walk at best through war-torn precincts with no roads. Conor’s organization, Next Generation Nepal, has reconnected almost 300 families with children they feared were lost to them forever. Website about the book.

  • 10. Kabul Beauty School Book Trailer by Deborah Rodriguez Soon after the fall of the Taliban, in 2001, Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as part of a group offering humanitarian aid to this war-torn nation. Surrounded by men and women whose skills–as doctors, nurses, and therapists–seemed eminently more practical than her own, Rodriguez, a hairdresser and mother of two from Michigan, despaired of being of any real use. Yet she soon found she had a gift for befriending Afghans, and once her profession became known she was eagerly sought out by Westerners desperate for a good haircut and by Afghan women, who have a long and proud tradition of running their own beauty salons. Thus an idea was born. With the help of corporate and international sponsors, the Kabul Beauty School welcomed its first class in 2003. Well meaning but sometimes brazen, Rodriguez stumbled through language barriers, overstepped cultural customs, and constantly juggled the challenges of a postwar nation even as she learned how to empower her students to become their families’ breadwinners by learning the fundamentals of coloring techniques, haircutting, and makeup. Yet within the small haven of the beauty school, the line between teacher and student quickly blurred as these vibrant women shared with Rodriguez their stories and their hearts: the newlywed who faked her virginity on her wedding night, the twelve-year-old bride sold into marriage to pay her family’s debts, the Taliban member’s wife who pursued her training despite her husband’s constant beatings. Through these and other stories, Rodriguez found the strength to leave her own unhealthy marriage and allow herself to love again, Afghan style. With warmth and humor, Rodriguez details the lushness of a seemingly desolate region and reveals the magnificence behind the burqa. Kabul Beauty School is a remarkable tale of an extraordinary community of women who come together and learn the arts of perms, friendship, and freedom.
