Different Types of Stink Bugs
1. Different Types of Stink Bugs
Stink bugs have become a growing problem in North America over the past few
years. Because of this, it’s important for people to know how to recognize stink
bugs so they can report them to the local wild life agency.
This pamphlet will go over the different types of stink bugs as well as facts about
each stink bug.
Brown Stink Bug
Feeds on plants and is a large agricultural pest in the
USA (first found in the USA in 2000). If this is the first
time you’ve seen a brown stink bug in your area,
contact the local extension office to report your finding
because scientists are interested in tracking it’s
movements. These are most likely the biggest stink
bug pest in your area.
Harlequin Bug
This stink bug migrated north from Mexico City into the
USA and is a major pest responsible for ruining
millions of crops by feeding on cabbage plants.

seeds of plants, vegetables, and fruits. Are present in
large agricultural areas across North America from late
Spring until the first frost of the year.
Spined Soldier Bug
One of the few stink bugs that actually is a benefit to
have in your garden. These stink bugs will kill other
garden insects by feeding on the and will do no harm to
your plants. Keep in mind though, that these stink bugs
may have a better chance of attacking you since they
are not herbivores.

This is another stink bug that attacks other insects in
your garden. This type of stink bug will not feast on
plants and will generally eat/kill 65+ garden pests every
1-6 weeks. While the normally feast on other insects,
they can sometimes eat plants, but are considered a
good stink bug to have.
Rough Stink Bug
Yet another helpful stink bug. This stink bug lives mostly
in the east and will eat caterpillars, beetles, and other
bugs which have a soft shell/body. They will release a
very powerful scent when disturbed so don’t touch these
guys.

or a very large gnat. These stink bugs feed mostly on weeds,
but because of their small size, they are not as intrusive or
noticeable as the larger stink bugs.
