Suspended Coffee
Offer a friend a coffee. A friend that you don’t know yet.
April 9th, 2013, Bucharest, Romania
2. Suspended coffee. Caffe sospeso. Pin a cup. Pay it forward.
Cafea în așteptare (RO), Висящо кафе (BG)
A good deed that has more than one version – random
generosity meets cozy coffee shop and friendly customers
or small charity gesture flows in local tribes.
A caffè sospeso (Italian: suspended coffee) or caffè pagato (paid coffee) is a cup of
WHAT?
coffee paid for in advance as an anonymous act of charity. The tradition began in the
working-class cafés of Naples, where someone who had experienced good luck would
order a sospeso, paying the price of two coffees but receiving and consuming only one.
A poor person enquiring later whether there was a sospeso available would then be
served a coffee for free.

4. How did the suspended
coffee movement start in
Romania
As a local initiative and with the support of getlokal.ro,
in less than two weeks after the idea was first
suggested, 35 places from 10 cities in Romania joined
the movement and implemented the suspended
coffee idea.
Some owners chose the gamification idea of paying for
a coffee for someone else, by encouraging customers
to leave notes with good thoughts for those who
would claim the coffee. Others preferred the charity
idea and found transparent mechanisms for giving the
products that were left “suspended” directly to the
people in need.
From the tradition in Southern Italy, passing through
Ukraine and Bulgaria and arriving in Romania, the
simplicity of the idea generated more and more
random acts of generosity.

movement in your area
After very good feedback from the Romanian cafe
owners and some international requests for the logo
that getlokal.ro created, we decided to share more, in
the spirit of the suspended coffee movement.
That is how suspendedcoffeeglobal.com appeared – a
site that any owner, from anywhere in the world can
use to list his/her place and download stickers and
posters that help them communicate the concept to
their customers. And if you want to share information
with others involved in the movement, you can
connect & share – all the relevant links are available.
Let the good deeds roll!
