This session is about the topic which is very dear to my heart: Virtualization. As some of you know that’s how Parallels (back then swsoft starter). So today I’m going to cover 5 topics: Virtualization today and why is it still important. Parallels Virtualization Line up update Virtualized Services – beyond VPS Parallels Virtualization update – where are moving with our Virtualization strategy
As virtualization technologies matured, any reasons to offer physical infrastructure are disappearing. While the benefits – such as better manageability, lower cost, better utilization of DC space are becoming even stronger. Our own momentum in terms of virtuozzo shipments, industry reports and forecasts – all prove that the replacement of physical infrastructure is accelerating. Some of the proof points include: our own shipments have increased 80% year over year in 2007. Some of you completely getting rid of non-virtualized offerings. 1VE/VM per server model is finally being adopted by number of players in the audience. Desktop is being quickly virtualized both as a service and as a means to simply work more securely and efficiently on the desktop. While the benefits might not be as strong as on the server, there is simply no disadvantages. Back-end infrastrcture – your own systems and applications. I know that many of have moved completely to Parallels Virtuozzo Containers. Clearly if you have non-virtualized services – it’s simply waste of money. All and all, I do strongly believe that non-virtualized servers today is simply waste of money.
There are numbers of traditional reasons for Virtualization that we’ve preached over the years – much more profitables, saves data center space, enomorous flexibility compared to dedicated, easier recovery, etc. And all those reasons are as compelling as they were 3 years. In fact they become even stronger as our own virtualization solutions matured and became more powerfull. Well now the stakes and appeal has become even higher. ALL 3 big drivers behind the market growth are enabled by virtualization and not possible to offer without virtualization. SaaS is enabled by Virtualization. For Traditional players it’s hardly possible to offer managed hosting without virtualization. And finally the biggest long-term trend of on-premise infrastrucure and services moving to hosted DC, can be taken advantage off ONLY on virtualized infrastructure.
In that regard I wanted to briefly talk about the value of your service compared to just deploying the software on-site. If would look at the value of your service, one of the primary things is virtualization and also virtualization expertise. Why would a company buy services from you if they can do on-site themselves. Right now most of you are not leveraging or marketing this. It’s important to recognize that many services can be really automated only if virtualized.

We
You are probably are quite familiar by now with our virtualization products. But given yesterday’s boat cruise fun (and knowing that some of our emplyees had to be reminded their name and martial status in the morning) let me just remind you what we offer today: Parallels Desktop for Mac Parallels Workstation for bare metal, linux, and windows Parallels Server – our upcoming hypervisor solution Parallels Virtuozzo Containers – leading OS virtualization solution that most of you are using today Parallels Virtual Automation – automating your virtualized offerings and enabling you to offer and manage them.
First let’s talk about the desktop products which might be less familiar for you in the audience. Desktop is being quickly virtualized both as a service and as a means to simply work more securely and efficiently on the desktop. While the benefits might not be as strong as on the server, there is simply no disadvantages.
Do not forget about upcoming Parallels Server for Mac. Leopard VMs might be cool. Apple hardware is not much more expensive than other vendors and they consistently rank top in support and customer satisfaction.
Even though this is a single product, I would encourage to not get carried away – hypervisor does have some inheretant drawbacks and Parallels Virtuzzo containers is an ideal product for hosting SaaS. As you matured many of you probably realized very important advantage of Virtuozzo – it reduces number of OSs you have. Managing 10s of 1000s of OS is simply not viable. I do believe that one of the reasons that managed hosting prices to be dropping is simply the fact that more companies will offer it using Parallels Virtuozzo Containers that provide clear fixed and management cost advantages compared to hypervisor.

A lot of customer‘s in the audience offered traditional VPSs for a few years now. While this was a good step 3-4 years ago, today this is medocre. You are robbing yourself of major opprtunities and loosing efficiencies that can be easily gained. But opprtunity is arguably more important. Bigger players – SIs, VARs, will not stand still and will gain the expertise of running service business quickly. Many of you are simply stuck in this stop-gap offering of VPSs. Do not get me more wrong – it‘s profitable; but majority of opprtunities are associated really with solving customer problems and offering just a server does not solve much of a problem for anyone.

The goal is to really take it to the next level. By the end of the year, we are planning to ship a single product where you’ll be able to create VMs or containers manageable through the same set of tools.
