The AuraWave is a Class II medical device that treats muscular pain at home.
Whether looking for a gentle massage or an invigorating deep-tissue
manipulation, the AuraWave uses low frequency pulses to target and pain, at
about the same cost as a single physiology session. The device is the first
FDA-cleared unit available without a prescription and while most users use it to
treat back pain, it also can be used on the extremities and joints for all types of
relief.

The AuraWave works in three ways:
1 Its electrical pulses intercept pain signals before they get to the brain
2 It stimulates the bodyâs natural painkillers; endorphins
3 It relaxes tense muscles which increases the blood flow and flushes away
toxins
Users attach adhesive pads either side of where the pain is, then choose one of
ten modes (six manual and four automatic) to deliver a custom level of relief
required, from soothing massage through to muscle stimulation. The handheld
device is wired to the pads, which deliver electrotherapy known as TENS
(Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation).

Any of us that suffer from aching backs (which any of us who are desk-bound will
know all about), stiff shoulders, strained knees or ankles, sore hips, or pain in the

chronic condition or just general wear and tear, electrotherapy can be used to
target the isolated pain.

The box set comes with a DVD and guidebook that takes you step by step through
the set up. Itâs very easy, although it might take you a bit of trial and error to find
the exact level of relief. Simply plug in the pads (you can either use the large or
the small, only two at a time) and place the pads either side of the pain. I used
the device on my post workout aches, starting on my thighs.
The pads adhere well and from my research on the web, they seem to hold up for
a long time too. I attached them either side of my hamstring muscle (good to
know they can be used on hairy skin without unwanted waxing treatments!) and
went for one of the four pre-programmed settings for a gentle stimulation. I then
went through the manual intensity levels in order to find one that I wanted,
which was to massage but penetrate quite deeply so that I would ache less the
following day.
Once Iâd got the hang of it, I used the smaller pads on my trapezium muscles
where I hold a lot of tension. Although it doesnât use fingers and knuckles like my
sports therapist, it delivers a knock-out level of instant relief. Just be careful when
youâre switching off, as you can turn up as easily as turn offâŠthat can be a shock!
I was such an advocate that the wife demanded a go and now weâre wrestling
over it! She uses the belt to target the general aches in her lower back, and
swears her posture has improved as a result.
One thing to note though, itâs not permanent relief. Whilst it relieves muscle pain
and stiffness, if you have an injury that needs physio it will only provide
3. temporary pain relief and wonât fix a chronic issue like muscle wastage (atrophy).

The AuraWave is suitable for anyone with pain in their back or extremities.
However the manufacturers advise against usage if you have any of the following:
atrophied muscles
muscles with spasms
impaired joint or limb muscles
undiagnosed painful muscles
epilepsy
cancerous lesions
critical ischemia of the lower limbs
abdominal or inguinal hernia
blood flow deficiencies/venous thrombosis
Neither should it be used if you wear a pacemaker, defibrillator or other
implanted metallic or electronic device, have just had surgery or have just had
acute trauma or fracture. Common sense please folks, the manufacturers
shouldnât have to tell us not to put the pads on either side of the head or heart or
on the stomach if youâre pregnant. Itâs for muscular pain, so use it wisely.

âI use it to treat my wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome because my computer

âThis has helped my lower back get pain relief. The only thing that would make
this better is if there was an adapter so you wouldnât have to use batteries all the
time.â PatmistyPatmistyPatmistyPatmisty, MD

The AuraWave is like a pocket massage therapist but instead of paying $80 a pop,
you can just pay a one-off fee of around $100 for access to pain relief, anytime
and anywhere! For me, it was perfect following a strenuous workout and
stretching session, for the wife, she loved the massage facility and it really helped
her lower back pain. It seems durable and has a great range of intensities, and Iâm
sure that it would really help those with stiff joints. Itâs great to not rely on drugs
and treat the cause rather than the symptoms.
