Briefing Notes:
The Leadership Evaluation and Development (L.E.A.D) Program
For executives and senior managers.
Appraisal/Evaluation Reports.
The Executive Evaluation and Appraisal report is, realistically, an expert Opinion based on an in-depth
interview and biographical background, a number of psychometric 'tests', and the completion of proprietary
instruments* (notably a sentence completion blank and adaptability index) and subjective personality testing.
The report is designed to be used by CEO’s for senior executive evaluation - specifically for hiring, promotion,
placement, succession planning and executive and leadership development.
Step 1: For the candidate the evaluation 'process' requires the following:
(Note the person will be required in our offices for approx 5-6 hours)
1. An initial 1- 2 hour biographical interview/discussion with the candidate. In part this is like a
‘job interview’ but is structured to cover both work and personal issues.
2. Approx 3 hours of psychometric tests (4 tests – 3 are timed). In common with most such
assessments we examine Numerical, Verbal and Abstract Reasoning. The assessment tools used
may vary. Some of these can be done on-line but are best completed in a controlled (office)
environment.
3. There are 2 proprietary questionnaires are used to examine personality, values, interests,
attitudes, capacity under stress, flexibility, self perception and self awareness. For completeness
we also administer an ‘off-the-shelf’ Personality Questionnaire which can vary between clients.
Each of questionnaires will take approx 40 minutes (total 2 hours).
4. Finally the questionnaires are reviewed by the consultant with the subject for clarity and
understanding
Step 2 – The analysis and writing of a report usually takes 24-36 hours
The Report itself is a 'warts-and-all' appraisal of candidate strengths and limitations and
usually runs to about 10 pages. The areas examined include Motivations, Needs, Goals;
Abilities Related to Intellect (Intelligence, Acumen, Creativity); Work Habits; Interpersonal
Skills (Ability to Get Along with Others, Attitudes towards Authority, Leadership Style);
Adjustment and Ability to Work under Pressure
Step 3 -- The final step is to provide feedback to the subject/candidate.
We do not generally provide a written report but we do quite freely discuss aspects of the evaluation
with the candidate at a confidential one-on-one meeting (approx 1 hour) if this is requested. While the
appraisal processes are the same for all executives, those who are specifically identifying areas for self
improvement and personal development (rather than being evaluated for appointment to a new position
or being promoted) may participate in additional coaching and developmental programs. See separate
briefing notes on Leadership and Development (L.E.A.D) programs.
*Dr McMurry's work is recorded in 'The Anatomy of a Great Executive' (Harper Collins 1991 by John Wareham) while an earlier version of
the sentence blank can be found in 'Recruiting in Australia' (Reed Books, 1986 Wayne Parkes).
