Learning w/ Digital Media
   Implications for students, parents
             and teachers

Comparison Sept. 2010 vs. 2011 Mobile Access to Moodle @ Zurich International School
Media: Educational vs.
                     Quality

• “Quality” and “educational” are not the same
  thing! –NAEYC 2011

• Educational in the title don’t mean an app has
  educational value!

Educational Connoisseurship
                                                       -Eisner
Just like a meal in a restaurant, learning
experiences are never identical. How can we
develop a palate that fosters our ability to identify
 the best?

New Media Connoisseurship
What makes new media educational?
The Machine is Using Us by; mwesch
Connoisseurship
To be a connoisseur you need three things:
1. Access
2. Awareness of qualities
3. Perceptivity: the ability to differentiate and to experience
the relationship between one quality and another

                                Access to Moodle
Connoisseurship
• A way of making public what we come to know, the
complexities, nuances and subtleties of aspects of the world
in which we have a special interest.
   – Ability to make fine grained discriminations among
     complex, subtle qualities (Eisner, 1991)

                               Access to Moodle
Qualities of new media for
            education
• Traditional filters and focus are broken down
• Collaborative
• Open ended

Spot the high quality
    educational new media
• Consider a the following eight examples of
   new media.
• Determine if you think they are high quality
   educational tools.
*caution don’t be fooled by the titles
*remember to think like a connoisseur

Learning w/ New Media
“67 percent of parents said they would
purchase a mobile device for their child to use
for schoolwork if the school allowed it, and 61
percent said they liked the idea of student
using mobile devices to access online Social view of learning, “we

Modern Learning and Living
          Leaves Footprints
• Students interacting with new media leaves
  footprints and shapes their future
Footprints as Learning
                Opportunities
“The "publish" button isn't the end of the process.
Now it's time to talk to—and learn from—strangers.”
                              -Will Richardson, 2011
Online student publishing:
• Leaves positive digital footprints (builds online
  resume)
• Builds connections
• Provides a large audience

Parents
#1 Need to be wired
   • Website, blogs and social media for school
     communication @ ZIS

                             -zis.ch
Parents
#2 Need help
   • Monthly help sessions
   • Online parent resource center

#3 Need to talk to their students about new media

#4 Parents have more questions than answers
• Should they be “friends” with their child on Facebook?
• What are “they” doing on their phones all the time? “My
daughter even tries to text in the shower?”

Comparison Sept. 2010 vs. 2011 Mobile
                Access to Moodle
Teachers
#1 Need access to technology and new
media

“More technology does not necessarily make for
improved pedagogy” (Medina, 208).
Teachers
#2 Need professional development
  – Professional Learning Networks are a key
component in helping teachers understand the
power of engaging with new media.

#3 Need to facilitate learning in a
blended environment

The Future

All stakeholders must look out for future changes
through the lens of a connoisseur

Comparison Sept. 2010 vs. 2011 Mobile
                       Access to Moodle
It’s not all about
                technology

Shift from control to trust is essential for
educational institutions to embrace the power of
new media for student learning!

We all (students, parents, teachers, administrators)
must be educational connoisseurs when
approaching new media.
