2. Project background:
As part of the efforts of the Federal Government towards food security
and food sufficiency, the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria
(ARCN) under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development established the adopted village / school program in
year 2009. Consequent upon the foregoing, IAR&T, Ibadan adopted
two villages and two schools to disseminate her research
breakthroughs to the farmers and school pupils. The schools and
villages adopted are the following:
• United Christian Senior Secondary, Omi- Adio.
• United Secondary School, Ijokodo
• Apete-Onidoko village and
• Orisunbare village

3. Objectives and expected output
• The main objective is to increase agricultural productivity among rural
communities while promoting agriculture integration through support
obtained by the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) .
Impacting well articulated training opportunity, capacity
building, empowerment project farmers and school pupils. Others are:
• Technology development, dissemination and adoption to boost agricultural
productivity and increased participation in (priority commodity sub-
sectors that are aligned with WAAPP-NIG priorities) of project
beneficiaries (villagers and school pupils ) as well as AROC neighboring
communities
To increase agricultural productivity with a prove in the selected project
centers. Farmers involvement, awareness and participation in the project as
well as interest in sustaining the project and copying on group and
individual basis were observed among the participants.
• To disseminate IAR&T technologies. This is commencing in earnest. An
opportunity to showcase her breakthrough.

5. Approved projects:
• Extension activities,

villages: Adifase high school and Orile Ilugun community.
This will allow for expansion and coverage to disseminate
the Institute breakthroughs and thereby improve farmers’
well being. more areas.

6. Recall of the project objectives
• Institute of Agricultural Research and Training
(IAR&T) at present has 2 adopted villages,(Apete-
Onidoko and Orisunbare) and 2 adopted schools
(United Secondary school, Ijokodo and United
Christian Secondary School, Omi-Adio) where
WAAP project is being implemented.
• The purpose of the project is to bring Agriculture
to the door steps of the beneficiaries in an
affordable and yet attractive way.

7. Expected output
• Participants awareness of WAAPP-NIG and IAR&T
• Increased number of villages and schools covered.
• Adequate knowledge of the approved projects by
beneficiaries
• Improved income and standard of living
• Better interaction among villagers and Scientists
• Well informed of young school pupils on improved
agricultural system and as a paying venture.

8. In order to achieve the objectives, the
Institute embarked on the following:
• Regular Extension Activities: Visitation, career talk, familiarization
tour, advisory services . To create awareness, sensitize project
beneficiaries.
• Institutional Interaction , Farmers’ exchange visits especially during
Institute’s major function such as REFILS workshop. Plans to
arrange interaction among farmers in the AROC and schools’
exchange programs. To expose the project farmers to research
community and allow for participatory approach in problems
solving mechanism.
• Linkages: Farmers are linked to sources of opportunities depending
on interest and potential benefits ( Such include recommendation
or support for any assistance from LGA, ADP or as the case may
be.)

9. IAR&T MAIZE VARIETIES
• ART98-SW1 (Oloyin)
maize varieties with considerable amount of glucose, high
crude protein (14%) and specially suitable for green maize
consumption. This was released and registered in 2001.
• ART-98-SW6-OB (Quality Protein Maize)
with about 3.5% and 0.67% lysine and tryptophan content
and grain yield of over 3.5t/ha, released in 2009.
• ILE1-OB (Quality Protein Maize)
with lysine and tryptophan contents of 3.7 and 0.88%
respectively. The varieties is adapted to all agro-ecologies
of Nigeria with a yield potential of about 3.7t/ha, released
in 2009

10. ACTIVITIES ACHIEVED
Extension activities
• Formation of farmers group/ young farmers club.
This was done in all the locations and still on-going except
for Apete village that already had an existing farmers
meeting. These group formed provide a forum for meeting
the interested farmers/ students and also create awareness
as well as make the project participatory and sustainable.
• Sensitization of women inclusion at 4:6 ratio
On-going, their attendance at meetings was hammered
especially at Apete-Onidoko.
• Orientation about the benefits of the WAAP Project
Given to each group at different times and each group
needs assessment was carried out.

11. Equipping the AROC
Out of all the needs listed, only few were approved for the
four adopted locations.
• Purchase of equipments viz: generator, television
sets, DVD, projectors among others for equipping the
meeting halls provided by the villagers and schools
respectively.
• Equipments were purchased and delivered to the villages
and Schools were received by the beneficiaries with all joy
in February 2013. (see appendix1).
• Two projectors were purchased and were not released to
them but were kept with the Head of Program for safe
keep and use by Scientists as at when needed.

12. Poultry project
• Building of a 12m by 12 m poultry house in all the centers February/
March, 2013.
• A central location was selected and prepared by the group in each of
the locations for the building of the poultry in the villages and schools
• The 12m by 12m building for the poultry was constructed based on
WAAPP directives in March, 2013 in all the stations supervised by the
beneficiaries. Incidentally, during the construction, monitoring team visited
the centers.
• Cages were purchased and delivered to all the centers.
• 50 Point -of –Lay birds were delivered to each stations (on the 22nd
April, 2013. With regular supervision, the farmers are left to manage the
farm so as for them to learn by practice.
• Construction of meeting house at Apete community based on farmers’
compelling and were willing to cut trees as their support for participation.

13. OTHER ACTIVITIES TO BE CARRIED
OUT:
• Demonstration of maize and cassava
• Dissemination of IAR&T technologies
• Training and career talk
• Expansion of poultry at existing centers and establishing
the new AROC
• Equipping the AROC meeting houses (new centers)and
completing existing yet to be completed ones
• Establishment of more AROC VIZ: Bakatari, Alabata villages:
Adifase high school and Orile Ilugun community. This will
allow for expansion and coverage to disseminate the
Institute breakthroughs and thereby improve farmers’ well
being. more areas.

14. • 90 birds per location was proposed, only 50pol birds
/location was possible leaving a gap of 40 pol birds.
• Burglary proof at Orisunbare
• Expansion to other four locations as contained in the
2013 work plan namely, Bakatari, Alabata, Adifase
High School and Community High School, Orile Ilugun.
• Adequate support could not be giving for effective
take off of the project such include supporting feeding
the birds until steady income is realized
• Demonstration plots for( maize and cassava in existing
centers are yet to be established.

15. GAPS BEWTEEN EXPECTED RESULT
AND THOSE OBTAINED
• Dissemination of IAR&T proven technologies is yet to commence
earnestly partly due to fund constraints and industrial action.
• Trainings for capacity building and poverty alleviation and technical know
how on the project .
• Renovation of meeting house at United secondary school , Ijokodo.
• Completion of meeting house at Apete- Onidoko
• 90 birds per location was proposed, only 50pol birds /location was
possible leaving a gap of 40 pol birds.
• Burglary proof at Orisunbare
• Expansion to other four locations as contained in the 2013 work plan
namely, Bakatari, Alabata, Adifase High School and Community High
School, Orile Ilugun.

16. • Construction of cassava processing center for
women groups.
• Maintenance and visits to project sites as
required.
• Lack of vehicle to ease mobility and routine
visits for intervention required.
• At least well facility is urgently required at
Ijokodo and Apete.

17. BUDGET EXECUTION:
• Two million naira (N2,000,000) was released
in Nov. 2012, A sum of two million and
hundred naira (N 2,000,100,00 expended
and retired as at the time of this report.

18. LESSONS LEARNT AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Farmers were happy for the poultry project. Not all the farmers
participated in the activities especially maintaining the poultry house
when no remuneration or incentive was given. It was an avenue to
reduce poverty and improve nutrition of the people, the project served
as eye openers for business opportunity in the community..
• The few people that participated in the villages were encouraging, they
had keen interets and had started influencing others.
• The waste from the poultry could be used as organic manure for
homestead garden /farming.
• The project was also made the Iddo LGA authority to be supportive and
now promised a borehole at Apete –IAR&&T adopted center.
• Timely and adequate fund release to allow efficient project initiation and
maintenance.
• While from our end prompt and timely retirement of fund will be
considered paramount.

19. • Other projects from IAR&T will also be carried
out in the centers especially farming system
research and extension activities.
• Farmers area of interest are to be considered
such include establishment of cocoa nurseries at
both Apete and Bare. .
• At Apete, the villagers insisted on the
construction of meeting house along side with
poultry house .

20. Strength and weaknesses
• There are some factors that aided the easy take off and completion
of the project. These factors are regarded in this report as areas of
strength and they include;
• Management support – the management of the institute gave full
support and understanding to the project .
• The community leaders showed interest and therefore were
receptive to the project when it was introduced. The interest
showed by the principals of the schools made gathering the student
at specified day of the week possible and also the clearing and
preparation of the land for the poultry.
• Good team work. The team work displayed by some members of
the program during hard time also helped in the achievement of
the project objectives.

21. Weaknesses:
• Some of the weaknesses of the project are as follows:
• Denial – a discriminatory behavior that completely denies the existence of
gender, It was pointed out that each opportunity would never be there for a group
without 40% woman population. lip service, compartmentalization and tokenism
were explored.
• Poverty led to withdrawal in group activities that may not bring quick money by a
number of them.
• Low morale
• Fund limitation
• Delay in the approval of the no objection
• The industrial action that was on going at the time the approval was given. This
made initial gathering of members for meetings difficult.
• Mobility
• Team did not have sufficient time to fully participate due to strike, role, and
document view functionality. A few members were responsible to do , efforts were
even misinterpreted.

22. Constraints and solution
• Fund: Timely and adequate release of fund-
Enough fund should be released as at when due
• Mobility- Vehicles should be made available for
effective monitoring
• Strike action- Special consideration should be
given to this kind of project.
• Expansion to other planned locations.
• Monitoring and evaluation should be carried out
concurrently.

24. RECOMMENDATION AND COCLUSION
RECOMMENDATION
• Project is on going, it is highly required to release fund to
meet essential needs /activities, especially feeding the
birds and have room for expansion. Project implementer
should also be committed to the task s .
• CONCLUSION
• The activities performed during the reporting period
helped to bridge gap between promises over time in the
adopted villages / schools and expected output. It was a
great encouragement to the farmers. With more
intervention and adequate and timely release of fund and
support, IAR&T, will continue to put her best and maximum
performance,, we will have better performance.
