We’ve looked at visual communications over the last 20 years. Now let’s look at the future. Where’s it all going? How’s it going to change? There are 5 key drivers of visual communications, as we see it, that will continue to reshape where, when, with whom, and how we work...The first driver is mobile devices. Cell phones and smart phones have proliferated around the world, connecting people in unimagined ways and bringing millions online who have no other computing device. And now that’s continuing and accelerating with the tablet PC. The iPad was launched in April 2010 and sold 3 million in 80 days. [http://www.ipadinsider.com/tag/ipad-sales-figures/]Today, according to Apple, 92% of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying iPads. [http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/apple_92_of_fortune_500_are_testing_or_deploying_i.php]In 2011, 64 million tablet PCs will be sold. In 2015, that will grow five-fold to 320 million sold that year.[Gartner, "iPad and Beyond: The Future of the Tablet Market," September 2, 2011, ID: G00217137]By then, there will be nearly 1 billion tablets cumulatively in use and 90% will be video enabled with a front-facing camera.[Gartner, "iPad and Beyond: The Future of the Tablet Market," September 2, 2011, ID: G00217137]The 2nd driver is network readiness. As of February 2011, 3G networks have been deployed in more than 165 countries and regions. [http://www.tele.net.in/telefocus/3g-a-beyond-lte-femtocell/item/7915-gaining-traction-global-3g-deployments-pick-up-pace]3G technologies account for over 5 Billion mobile connections today, approximately 89% of the market.[http://www.constellationrg.com/23121/4g-deployment-update-from-4g-americas/]Today, there are 193 4G networks in service with 39 in the Americas. According to experts, about 37% of all Android smart phones are now 4G enabled.[http://www.wcai.com/4g-global-update-2011-10-03.html]The 3rd driver is cloud delivery. Forrester Research expects the global cloud computing market to reach $241 billion in 2020 compared to $41 billion in 2010. [http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/cloud-computing-market-241-billion-in-2020/47702]By next year, according to Gartner, 40% of enterpriseswill adopt a blend of cloud- and premises-based approaches to meet UC needs. The 4th driver is social connectedness.Social networking is another mass trend transforming cultures and human interaction while opening up massive new markets for everything from social gaming to video chat.Facebook launched 7 years ago and today has 800 million users – about 12% of the world’s population. [http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics]It’s just one of many social networking services and business social services such as Jive and LinkedIn. By 2015, the number of people participating in video chats is forecast to grow 14 times to more than 140 million, and a lot of that will be happening through social sites.[GigaOM Pro, "The Consumer Video Chat Market, 2010-2015" Report, 2010]The 5th driver is the fact that the latest generation has been raised on video. Every day, people watch 3 billion videos on YouTube.[http://www.youtube.com/t/press_statistics]By 2015, video – which now is about even with data traffic – will account for two-thirds of mobile traffic.[http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns341/ns525/ns537/ns705/ns827/white_paper_c11-520862.html]How can you use these trends to your advantage?
. Interoperability is an important consideration for most buyers who want to be able to connect to their existing equipment and to the majority of videoconferencing endpoints in the world.. The videoconferencing experiences on $600 to $1,000 mobile devices and PCs compared with what you get on $15,000 purpose-built systems represent two extremes. When 90% or more of conference rooms are not equipped for videoconferencing, there is clearly a gap in the market.. Forrester’s data shows that 15% of North American and European information workers have used videoconferencing on mobile devices for work-related calls. One of the reasons desktop video adoption is taking off is that the video quality is improving thanks in part to faster processors in PCs that can handle the codecs used to compress video delivered over the Internet.
