Wait! They grew up Christian? 5 wild and crazy entertainers
who grew up in church
When it comes to kids who grow up in the church, two stereotypes are prominent: That of the
angelic, obedient, perfect children and Hellions—kids who seem to work for Satan himself.
According to research released by the Barna Group recently preacher’s kids (also known as
PK’s) and kids raised in the church are often the quickest to say “adios” to it.
In fact, out of the 603 senior pastors of Protestant churches throughout the continental United
States that Barna interviewed for its study, only 40 percent have kids who are still active
Christians.
The rest drift away from the church. Some of these prodigals end up in the music business, and,
perhaps to make up for lost time, they act wild and crazy so no one would ever guess that they
actually did receive home training.
Here are five of them.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry (real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson) is known for her wild child antics—from
kissing girls on stage to marrying raunchy comedian and actor Russell Brand. Even though
Perry seems out of control, it wasn’t always that way. She grew up in a Christian home headed
by Penecostal ministers Maurice Hudson and Mary Perry. She went to Christian schools
growing up and even pursued a Gospel music career under the name Katy Hudson before
going mainstream pop.
MGK
MGK (a.k.a. Machine Gun Kelly a.k.a. Richard Colson Baker) is tatted up, smokes lots of weed
from Puff Daddy’s private dispensary and can convince ladies to service him on stage in front of
the whole world. What’s not to love about him? As far as white rappers go, MGK might not
have a lyrical flow on par with the Eminems of the world, but he makes up for it by connecting
with audiences and being full of energy. His songs, “Wild Boy” feat. Waka Flocka Flame and
“Invincible” are fun and have the ability to get the crowd hype. No doubt MGK’s ability to get
the crowd bouncing and connection with audiences comes from his childhood days when he
spreading the “Good News” with his missionary parents. Reportedly MGK’s dad was not
pleased when he learned junior wanted to reach the masses with rap. Why? Because MGK’s
dad wanted his son to go out into the mission field too.
Angel Haze
Angel Haze (Raykeea Angel Wilson) is an up-and-coming rapper. Though she was recently
featured in rap magazine XXL’s 2013 “Freshman Class” edition, Haze is more known for her
outspokenness, pansexuality and Twitter beefs with fellow raptress Azaelia Banks. She has also
been criticized for her devilishness—The title of her mixtape “Classick” may be an allusion to the
Magick performed by people such as Aleister Crowley and her video for “Werkin Girls”
supposedly contains a lot of Illuminati symbolism. Those who know Haze may think it’s weird

that she’s down with Team Satan since she grew up in a very strict Christian household.
“We all lived in the same community,” she said of her upbringing in the Greater Apostolic
denomination. “You weren’t allowed to wear jewelry, listen to music, eat certain things, to date
people…You weren’t allowed to do anything.”
Lil’ Wayne
Though Lil’ Wayne (aliases include Dwayne Michael Carter, Wayne, Weezy and Lil’
Weezy) does typical rapper stuff like sipping sizzurp and having a gang of baby mommas, he’s
different from the rest of the pack because who he appears to be is different from who he is.
Because he has so many layers, he seems like a rap chameleon, morphing from a doo-rag
wearing NOLA whoadie who raps about hot girls into a dreadlocked skater dude who sings on
tracks. Adding to Weezy’s apparent depth is the fact that he grew up Catholic, and to let him
tell it, is still a practicing one. He even prays and reads his Bible before gigs.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus (also goes by Destiny Hope Cyrus) is line-dancing country musician Billy Ray
Cyrus’ daughter. As a kid, she used to spit lines from scripts at the behest of Disney on
"Hannah Montana." Now that she’s an adult she spits innuendo in pop songs, smokes joints
onstage at award shows and rubs her scantily clad body on male R&B singers. She’s also a
Christian. She professed her faith in Christ in 2005 when she was baptized in a Southern
Baptist Church. Though some Christians might object to Cyrus’ behavior, her former pastor,
Dave Roberts, pretty much pulled a Tupac and said only God can judge Miley:
“I usually write [people who send me hate mail about Miley] back to say, ‘You’re talking about
a young girl, maybe your prayer and support would be more valuable than your critique… you
can’t imagine the pressure (she’s under),’” he said.
