1. When Neurotic Tendencies Become Psychotic
Disorders
Human
psychology is
complex
considering
the wide
range of
personalities
and factors
involved.
Most people,
however,
have neurotic
tendencies
either as a byproduct of their current situations or something that
ingrained in their personalities. Being neurotic or having neurotic
tendencies is normal in a sense that all people can experience distress.
Neurosis is a broad category of psychological condition wherein a
person may suffer some sort of distress such as depression, obsession
and even paranoia. Being neurotic is distinct from being psychotic
mainly for its affect on the social and other normal functions of an
individual. Unlike psychosis, neurosis does not interfere with the
normal functions of a person. In some ways, it is a very mild form of
psychosis.
On the other hand, neurotic individuals may easily become psychotic
depending on the environmental factors. Traumatic events, drug use
and certain types of infections or pathology can lead to psychotic
2. episodes. These conditions, nonetheless, are still not considered to be
insanity because they usually do not have lasting effects.
Neurotic people are aware of their neurosis as compared to psychotic
and psychopathic people. For example, obsessive-compulsive disorder
is a type of neurotic disorder that forces people to do repetitive and
ritualistic things but they are well aware of the problem.
These ritualistic behaviors are generally irrational but hard to control.
The OCD may not necessarily interfere with the social life and job of a
person but they may feel anxious knowing that they have this disorder.
It becomes a psychotic disorder if the sufferer become unaware of their
abnormality and may even consider it to be desirable. Psychotic
disorders are normally defined as losing touch with reality such as in
the cases of hallucinations and delusions.
