1. Windows Vista vs. Unix Most important difference - Windows is a GUI
2. Windows Vista –Visual Styles Windows Aero - Fancy Pants 3D, Live Thumbnails, Windows Animation, Translucency, other stuff you don’t really need. Needs Powerful PC. Windows Vista Standard - Same look as Aero without all the worthless things. Needs the same processing power. Windows Vista Basic - Looks similar to Windows XP, some simple animations. Used in middle of the road PC’s. Windows Classic - Looks similar to Windows 2000, simplest of all. Works for low end systems.
3. File System File: The actual data, always has a .* extension. Ex. computer.txt, index.html, quicktime.exe Directory: A way of organizing data. Ex. HW2 folder inside the Homework Directory Folder: Just another word for directory
4. Shortcuts A shortcut is a link to a file in a directory placed in an area to make the file more accessible. Visual Difference: Arrow in bottom left hand corner. Physical Difference: Shortcuts aren’t necessarily in the same place a program is installed.
5. File Server When you connect to a hard drive over a network to gain access to data, it’s called a file server. NCSU utilizes this within the unity system. An example is your K: drive. It is not physically located in the computer you are on, it is pulled in from the server!
