The results suggest that most young people are illegally downloading music. Some people say this is
killing the music industry. A lot of people are buying CDs still though which are mainly the older
generation. Some of the younger generation do a selection of these, which is putting more money into
the music industry. No one we surveyed buys vinyl, one person said that they would buy vinyl if it was
more easily available. A small group of people liked to preview the music on YouTube before buying
it.

Reason for use
The results show that people are illegally downloading because it’s free and easy. This means they’re
putting value before quality and the law. CD’s are selling because they are good gifts to people and
you can’t gift downloads because they are not physical items. People find downloading is a quick
thing to do so it saves them the time of going to a shop to buy it. One person said that legal
downloads are better because they contain less virus’. This shows that illegal downloading has faults
and that it’s safer to legally download music.

Most people are spending £0.00 to £9.00 a month on music which shows people want to spend as
little as possible. This means they have more money to pay for merchandise or gigs. By people not
spending much on music, the industry loses money, but because the fans have more money to go to
gigs, record labels are using the 360 degree business model to get money from sales of merchandise
and gig tickets. Some people spend more money at different times of the year, such as Christmas, so
the music industry gets more money them because a CD is a good stocking filler.

Most young people are using the internet to download music as it’s easily available these days, whilst,
older generations are buying music from the supermarket because it’s easy to pick up when they are
out shopping. Only a few people are buying from music shops as they are more expensive to buy
from and they have to travel there. Most people use the internet because they are downloading
music.

3. The panorama programme tells us that too many people are
downloading illegally. They focus on illegal downloading, but our
results show that a lot of people still do buy CD’s and that the
programme is not as in touch with the young population as they
think they are. A lot of the people we surveyed said they downloaded
illegally and then bought the CD to have a hard copy of the music.
The panorama programme states a new law would write 3 letters of
warning to a person before they would sue them. If they do this, the
people that buy both will not sample the music and therefore not buy
the CD which means the music industry loses money. The fines would
be of £1000 and this would mean they have less money to spend on
music. They would also slow down the internet connection and even
cut people off. This would affect other industries. This would stop people
being able to sample music before buying. Panorama found out that
people buy music from sampling it and that people that buy illegal
downloads, on average spend more on music than people paying for
legal downloads. The results we found out on how people buy their
music supports panoramas idea that too many people are illegally
downloading music.
