The Union flag had 35 stars representing West Virginia as the 35th state. The first Confederate flag had 7 stars on a blue field representing the 7 states in the Confederacy. The second Confederate flag, known as the "Stainless Banner", was adopted in 1863 but was mistaken for a surrender flag. The third Confederate flag, adopted in 1865, was similar to the second but added a red bar to distinguish it from the surrender flag. The Confederate battle flag, designed after Bull Run by General Beauregard, had 13 stars representing the states claimed by the Confederacy and was known as the "Southern Cross".
