Employability Skills of the Students
“Employability and Skill set of Newly Graduated Engineers in India', which
recently surveyed employers in 20 sectors such as IT, power and
infrastructure.
Half of the respondents were large companies with over 500 employees,
with 40 per cent from North India, 27 per cent from the West and 19 per cent
from the South.
Interestingly, where the employers found the fresh engineering graduates
most lacking in is ‘high-order thinking' skills – Employment Skills for critical
thinking and problem solving. This is despite a good academic performance.
Another area, considered most important by employers, and where a large
gap was found is on – integrity, teamwork, reliability and willingness to learn.
Employers are not looking for hi-end technological skills from the fresher
and they are very well aware about student’s academic syllabus.

Employability Skills of the Students
Technical skills of the students can be groomed / compromised by the
employers. But not all the skills like decision making, email etiquette, team
work etc can be taught.
Despite good academic performance, they lack on framing right words in
an email. Most of them send email without subject / irrelevant subject and
body of the email.
According to the survey, jointly carried out by the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the World Bank, 64
percent of surveyed employers are "somewhat", "not very", or "not at all"
satisfied with the quality of engineering graduates' skills.
Student’s skills are quantified, but not qualified – says a report.
All the students should not be trained on generic skills. For example. Java
or Dot Net. A SWOT analysis needs to be done to understand who needs
what skills and training should be based on the analysis.

Most of the external training in the institution happens based on an
assumption. Training to be done based on client’s expectation alone.

Urban students get better industry exposure than the rural students. There
needs unique skill set training to bridge the gap between urban and rural
educational institutions.
Students and Educational institutions lacks on Social Media strategy.
Campus placement strategies in the educational institution needs to be
revamped.
Employers struggle to discuss the recruitment jargons with the placement
practitioners in the institutions. People who are practicing it are either not
from the recruitment background or a retired person from the government
job.

duration among the students. So concentrate on the employability skills.
There needs a continuous career enrichment programs from their second
year till final year. That includes both technical and non-technical.
Capability of the campus placement practitioners needs to be enriched
based on new recruitment strategies.
Students and Educational institutions to improve their Social Media
strategy.
Students need to be trained more on their life skills like SWOT Analysis,
