2. What is the Day of Caring?
• One-day service opportunity for local
businesses and non-profits.
• Structured volunteer experience.
• Provides participants with an introduction to
volunteering.
• Projects include painting, landscaping,
construction, interacting with clients, spring
cleaning and more.

3. Planning Your Day of Caring Project
• Brainstorm with staff, develop a wish list, think
outside the box.
• Skill based opportunities
– New this year
• Complete the projects forms online
• One form must be completed for each project.

4. Skilled-Based Projects
• Skilled-based volunteers use their professional skills to benefit
a non-profit or cause.
– Ex: Marketing, accounting, grant writing, translating,
computers, website etc.
– Other days of caring across the nation have used skilled
based projects to build deeper relationships.
• We are asking that you consider possibly listing a skills-based
project along with your more traditional Day of Caring clean
up projects.
– This will give companies more variety and non-profits the opportunity
to receive a wider variety of services.

• Promotes your agency and creates awareness of the programs and services

• Board Connections: a great resource to list board and committee positions need to
be filled in your organization.

9. Online Project Registration
• UWECI will enter all the projects into Volunteer
Solutions.
• Not registered? UWECI will register your agency with
basic information.
• Receive a password and login information.
• Each agency is responsible for checking the project
information for accuracy.
• Changes should be made by March 25.

• Description: Help us paint our adult residential bedrooms! All you need to participate is basic painting
skills. We will provide all painting supplies, snacks, lunch, and water. If volunteers could bring extra

• Description: Replace a 3' X 8' section of drywall and insulation in our volunteer service area. We'll
provide lunch, water, and cleaning supplies. We'd like volunteers with experience hanging and finishing
drywall on metal framing. Volunteers will need to provide one sheet of drywall, insulation, drywall tape,
joint compound, drywall finishing tools, and gloves for handling insulation.

14. Day of Caring Online Matches
• UWECI will forward the Day of Caring link to
companies to sign up for project(s).
• UWECI will approve all matches.
• When a company coordinator registers for your
project, you will receive a very short email. The
subject of the email will be: “A volunteer is interested
in your agency!”
• The text of the email will give you the name and
contact information (either email or phone number)
of the individual who has registered to volunteer with
you.

17. Contacting Your Volunteers
• Email or call company coordinators immediately.
• Host a site visit.
• Agencies may be working with multiple companies.
• Assign staff leads if you have multiple projects.
• Go through the Agency Checklist

18. Planning the Day of Caring Project
• Have a contingency plan (rain, finished early, etc.).
• Obtain materials and prepare work space.
• Have appropriate number of tools on site.
• Make arrangements for snacks and refreshments.
• Prioritize projects.
• Print out instructions on how to complete tasks.
• Safety first.
• Keep in touch with your contact before DOC.
– Communicate any changes.

– Do not assign yourself tasks.
– Be available for trouble-shooting.
– Complete most important tasks first.
– Be available, do not leave your project.

– Schedule time for clean-up.
– Assign volunteers to clean-up tasks.

– Talk again about the tasks completed and how they
impact your organization.

interested in being involved again with your

22. Safety, Liability and Insurance
• All agencies are required to have liability waivers signed by
volunteers.
• For a more efficient process, each volunteer can read the
waiver and then sign a group signature sheet. This waiver
should also include a photography waiver.
• Liability Insurance- contact insurance provider ask for
“Certificate of Insurance” or “Addendum” to your policy for
the DOC.
• All agencies are required to fax copy of Certificate of Liability
Insurance to 319 398-5381 Attn: Sue Driscoll or email to

24. Top Volunteer Complaints
• They didn’t keep me busy.
• There were not enough tools.
• Nobody taught me how to do the tasks to
complete the project.
• We were left alone and had questions.
• I don’t understand how painting or
landscaping can impact the community.

25. Volunteer comments from survey
• Give information on how to continue volunteering
after the Day of Caring.
• My company coordinator did not have the address
right where we should be going to so time was
wasted in the morning figuring out where to go.
• We finished our project early and would have liked to
have had additional work? Maybe have some backup
activities ready in order to fully utilize the volunteer's
time.
