Hello Area I Community!!!
June quickly arrived and so far, the weather is
gorgeous, warm, clear skies, and now and then the
perfect breeze to cool you off!!!
We have a lot planned for the month of June;
however, this month is special as we see the
departure of two great leaders within USAG Red
Cloud and Area I. Our Garrison Commander, Col.
Mike Scott, is departing for his new assignment at the
Pentagon. Col. Scott’s Change of Command will be
held on 30 June, where he will turn over the USAG
Red Cloud and Area I “Colors” to incoming Garrison
Commander Col. John Haefner. Change of Command
will be held at the “Village Green” on Camp Red Cloud… so we hope to see you
there to wish Col. Scott farewell and Col Haefner a big Area I welcome!!
Our other departure will be the Deputy to the Garrison Commander, Mr.
Freddie L. Giddens. Mr. Giddens departs Area I for USAG Japan as their new
Deputy to the Garrison Commander. Two individuals that have tremendously and
positively impacted the quality of lives for our Soldiers, civilians and families. We
wish them both a big fond farewell and also wish them the very best in their future
career endeavors. “So Long Col. Scott and Mr. Giddens; you will be missed!”
Both Col Scott and Mr. Giddens farewell dinner and luncheon are hosted in
June. For information regarding those two events; please call the USAG Red Cloud
and Area I Command Group.
Col. Scott has written a farewell message to all USAG Red Cloud and Area I
Community members, which is available on page 26.
June is also the month for the USAG Red Cloud and Area I annual Employee
Appreciation Day! This event was first hosted last November with great
participation by Area I employees. The event will occur 20 June. This means most
Area I programs and services provided to the community will either close or be
opened for limited hours and/or offer limited services that day. This is Area I
leadership’s opportunity to thank and recognize our USAG Red Cloud and Area
I employees for their dedicated and exceptional service to Area I community
members.
Lastly, as you know if you have been here long enough or if you are new to
Korea, June and the rest of the summer period becomes hot! It’s very important
that you prepare for the hot weather by reading all the Safety Warnings offered by
the Area I Safety Office. Drink plenty of fluids and keep yourself covered from the
suns stinging rays. For more information on the Area I Summer Safety program,
please contact the Area I Safety Director, Mr. Garvin Purtteman and his team of
safety experts for more information at DSN: 732-8528.
Remember the pools are open, so be safe while swimming and ensure you have
plenty of sun block to protect yourself from the sun.
Don’t forget to peruse the “In the Zone Magazine” for all the latest and

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION SET FOR

AT CAMP CASEY INDIANHEAD GOLF COURSE PARKING LOT
Fairgoers will have lots to fun and entertaining things to see and activities to choose from during the action-
packed Family and Morale, Welfare Recreation (FMWR) Department’s 2014 Independence Day Celebration
(held on Friday, July 4th from 3 to 10 p.m.) near the Camp Casey Golf Course.
The activities begin at 3 p.m. followed by a host of live stage entertainment on two stages, plus a variety of
games, contests, demonstrations and displays, including kite flying and a ‘Crazy Chicken Chase’ event for the
adults.
There’ll be carnival rides, water pools, donkey rides, a petting zoo, carnival games, food and beverage booths,
a flea market filled with great bargains, belly dancing, military police dog demonstrations, the ever popular
‘Salute to the Nation’ performance and a special appearance by the famous 2ID Band, all capped off with an
awesome aerial fireworks display at 10 p.m.
Here’s what you can expect to see and enjoy during this very special FMWR event.

Members of the Warrior Country community are invited to participate in the 2014 Independence Day
Celebration and Aerial Fireworks Display at Camp Casey on Friday, July 4th. The big event will feature a
variety of live entertainment, carnival rides and games, kite-flying, food and beverage booths, an auto/
motorcycle show, mule rides, a kiddieland booth and much, much more.
Entertainment officials are also looking for individuals with special talent to enter the Warrior Country
Talent Search Competition. The event, offering prizes and Commander’s Cup points for the winners, will
take place on the event main stage for festival goers to enjoy.
Got a hearty appetite? Then sign up for the Warrior Country Food-Eating Competition and grind away.
Prizes and awards for all winners in youth and adult categories.
For those who think they make the best chili around, now’s your chance to prove it with the Warrior
Country Chili Cook-off Contest. Bring your ingredients and create your masterpiece on site where judges
will taste and determine the winner. Prizes and awards for all winners.
Other competition include fun-filled Water Balloon Fight Competition for those who dare to get wet and
cool during the warm July afternoon at the event fairgrounds, and for the more aggressive type there’s the
ever-challenging Obstacle Course to test your athletic abilities while onlookers cheer you on.

“A High –Adventure/High Adrenalin Outdoor Recreation (ODR) program
combined with L-LAAD as part of the Army’s holistic approach to RESET”
A platoon size element can make reservations directly with Family and MWR Outdoor Recreation. This is
a centrally funded program through the department of the Army. Activities include paintball, scuba, rock
climbing, skiing, snowboarding zip line, ATV, mountain biking, rope course and more.

1) Each unit participating in Area I unit level sports program will be awarded 100 entry points per sport. If a unit forms more than one team
for participation in league play, the unit will be awarded entry and place points for both teams. Unit teams Must Complete the season to
be eligible for team entry points.
2) 25 points will be awarded to each unit assigning in writing a Unit Sports, Fitness Aquatics coordinator (USFAC).
3) Units attending mandatory coaches’ meeting will be awarded 5 points.
4) Teams will be penalized 20 points for each forfeited game. Three total forfeits will eliminate the team from competition, and no
participation points will be awarded.
5) Unit will be awarded 5 points for each soldiers who competes and finishes in a Individual Sports Championship, maximum of 100 points

This month marks the last of my time here in Area-1 and I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt
appreciation for the entire Family and MWR Team as they continue to provide the very best services to the
best customers in the world! In The Zone is just one of the many examples where their continual pursuit of
excellence is seen every day.
Also, I would like to extend my thanks to all of the other garrison directorates, special staff, and all of our
partners for their amazing support and dedication. Their personal touch and customer first attitude has ensured
that our Soldiers, Families and Civilians will continue to enjoy the very best on the Korean Peninsula. Your
dedication, efforts and professional service was consistent with our theme of Soldiers First...Quality Programs
and Services Always.
In all, I would like to thank the entire community for your continued support of the programs here in Area-1;
our community has become stronger and more resilient over the last two years because of the great team work.

Wolmido Island is located 1 Km off the Incheon coast, with a name that describes an island shape
resembling the tail of a half moon. Many people visit during weekends due to its close proximity to
Seoul; and the numerous cafes and seafood restaurants overlooking the West Sea. The island has
several interesting sights such as Culture Street, the Doodle Pillar, Meeting Square, Arts Square,
Performance Square, Good Harvest Square and many other squares that feature street performers
and artists. You can also visit Play Hill, the island’s theme park, or take a boat cruise that goes around
the island every hour. Although young children are welcome, parents are advised that youngsters in
strollers may have a difficult time navigating their way aboard and around the tour boats.

The Army’s Relocation Readiness Program (RRP)
has been an integral part of the Army Community
Service (ACS) since 1965. It began with a few services
designed to assist Army Families as they moved
around the world. One of the first services included the
Lending Closet, which provided temporary household
equipment for Families to use until their household
goods arrived.
The RRP has changed tremendously over the years,
but our mission has stayed the same: to help military
members and their Families with a smooth relocation
process. In order to accomplish this task, ACS has
incorporated many programs and programs to assist
new Families moving into or out of the community.
For service members and Families moving into the
community, services include not only the Lending
Closet, but also the Community Newcomer’s
Orientation, Basic English classes, Outreach Services to
our dispersed population.
When service members and Families depart the
community, we are also ready with a helping hand.
When moving to a new duty station, people always
need information, whether it’s information about
schools, housing, employment or other issues and
concerns. The Military Home Front is a web-based
data system that will answer many, if not all of these
questions. An ACS Relocation Manager is always
prepared to discuss your move with you.
In addition to the physical and psychological aspects
of moving, there’s always the financial aspects of a
move. The Government ships your household goods
and gives you travel funds, but it may not be enough
to cover all expenses. While advance pay may seem
like a great solution, remember that you must pay back
all advances within 12 months. The temporary hardship
of relocating may impact your Family for some time.
As part of your Relocation Planning, be sure to see an
ACS Financial Counselor.

Class Descriptions
COMMUNITY NEWCOMER’S ORIENTATION - Provides
newly-arrived civilian employees and all spouses information
on: common legal issues such as Ration Control and Black
Marketing, SOFA Stamp and visa requirements, Non-
Combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO), installation support
facilities including Medical TRI-CARE, Army Substance
Abuse Program, American Red Cross, ACS, Korean culture and
customs, and culture shock. This includes a “Get Smart” Public
Transportation/Subway Class to Uijeongbu; on the second day,
a co-sponsored (CAC ACS) Dongducheon City tour takes
place from 0930-1600 –a Korean lunch is provided. Child Care is
available. Open to all Soldiers, spouses and civilians.
IMMIGRATION YANGJU TRANSPORTATION – Free monthly
bus transportation to the Yangju Immigration Office for
NEWCOMERS and authorized community members requiring
SOFA/VISA assistance/ renewal.
SMOOTH MOVE – Soldier preparing for a PCS will gain
information on transportation, finance, transitioning and their
next duty station by attending this workshop.
CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH (ESL) – Classes give non-English
speaking Family members the opportunity to increase their
knowledge of the language through practical application and
practice.
FIRST TERM SOLDIER TRAINING - This important class covers
budgeting and basic money management, saving, credit,
insurance, and other financial topics. This class is mandatory
for all first term soldiers. This training is also available online at
www.myarmyonesource.com.
LARGE PURCHASES – This instruction will cover how making
Large Purchases is a very important step and that it should
never be done on impulse. A large purchase is anything that is
not budgeted for and may require time to save to purchase it
without credit.
USING CREDIT WISELY – This course of instruction will inform
the Soldier just how important it is to use their credit wisely.
Long ago credit was used to buy supplies before farm crops
came in. Presently, too many people use credit to buy items
they just cannot afford. This instruction will point out some of
the do’s and DON’Ts when it comes to using credit.
PARENTING A TEEN - Parenting children is hard enough,
and the teen years can be challenging. Discuss issues around
teenagers and how to work with them, without confrontation.
COUPLES COMMUNICATION - Did he/she just say that? Why
doesn’t my partner hear what I’m saying? He/She never listens
to me! Learn some tips on how to be “heard” and “hear” your
partner, for better understanding of what is trying to be said.
PARENTING EDUCATION (3+) - Sometimes we don’t know
what to do with our kids’ behaviors. Learn some positive ways
to discipline children with natural consequences, not negative
punishment.
ANGER MANAGEMENT - Anger is a normal emotion. It is what
we do with our anger that can cause issues. This class will give
you some skills in how to deal with our anger and turn it around
so anger can motivate us to do something positive and not just
react.
EFMP ENROLLMENT AND UPDATING PROCEDURES – Do
you have family members enrolled in EFMP? Do you know and
understand how EFMP benefits your family? EFMP updates are
mandatory; please see us about the proper procedures.

W I N N E RCasey Library Bookmark Design Contest
Nine year-old Kelsey Plath won the 2014 Casey Library
Bookmark Design Contest with her creative, colorful bookmark
that will be produced and distributed throughout all Area l
libraries soon. The contest, held last month, drew a variety
of entries but judges overwhelmingly selected Kelsey's
entry to receive the top award. Kelsey received a special gift
bag of selected FMWR items for her creative effort. Kelsey,
homeschooled at the 3rd grade level, is the daughter of
SSGT Stanley Kreft, assigned to Baker Company, and Alaina Kreft. Kelsey said she noticed the
contest announcement in a recent copy of the 'In The Zone' magazine and decided to enter. The
young lady won first prize in the recent Easter Egg Coloring Contest at the Casey Commissary.
She is a frequent visitor to the Casey Library to check out an assortment of books and movies.
Congratulations to Kelsey for an outstanding contribution to the Area l Library program.

St. Mary’s Hospital Shuttle Service
St. Mary’s Hospital in Uijeongbu offers free daily bus transportation to and from Camp Casey, Camp Red
Cloud and Camp Stanley. The bus departs the Camp Casey TMC/Health Clinic at 8 a.m. and will make
stops at CRC or Stanley if patients have made appointments at St. Mary’s Hospital.
When the last patient of the day has completed his or her medical appointment, they will be transported
to the Camp Red Cloud bus terminal for the return trip to Camp Casey.
