Switch to High Definition
The Command Channel and the
Morale, Welfare and Recreation channel
on Camp Zama are now available in high definition.
Sagamihara Family Housing Area will receive
the HD upgrade at a later dater to be announced.

The listing for these HD channels is forthcoming
and will be announced as soon as it is available.

The HD channels will require viewers
to re-scan the channels on their TVs
in order to view them.

Each TV model has a slightly different
channel-scanning process,
but it can generally be done
by following these steps:

1. Press the “Menu” button on your
converter
box, converter box remote, HDTV or
HDTV
remote.
2. Go to “Setup” or “Settings.”

3. Go to “Installation,” “System” or
“Channels.”
4. Go to “Scan Channels,” “Program
Channels,”
“Auto Scan,” “Auto Program” or
“Auto Tuning.”

5. Press “Select,” “Enter” or “OK”
to start the scan.

The channel formerly used for
the Pentagon Channel is scheduled to be used
for broadcasts that are live-streamed,
such as community information exchanges
and town hall meetings.

Armed Forces Network channels
are scheduled to be available in HD
sometime in December.

Custodial Cleaning Frequencies
Due to recent increased support of
in-house custodial cleaning tasks at new facilities,
the Directorate of Public Works
will be reducing its cleaning frequencies
with the exception of the following buildings:

Guidance on Transition to Heating Season
Due to the forecasted low temperatures
and the budgetary cuts mandated by Congress,
the Directorate of Public Works will provide
intermittent heating through early November 2013.

Heating will be provided based on
the following criteria for five consecutive days:
- 68 degrees or below from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- 55 degrees or below from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Following the intermittent heating period,
DPW will transition into “No Heating/No Cooling”
in order to perform
the necessary preventive maintenance,
checks and services required on the heating systems
throughout U.S. Army Garrison Japan
installations prior to the heating period.

Based on historical weather records,
intermittent heating period is projected to begin
on or around early November.

Open-Forum Discussion at Arnn Elementary
An open-forum discussion titled
“Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades, and
What You Can Do About It”
Nov. 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
at Arnn Elementary School’s Teresa Torres
Information Center.

The forum is free to attend, and
all parents are invited.
Ben Kolodziej, Arnn’s gifted education teacher,
will discuss key points from the book
based on the research of Dr. Sylvia Rimm.

These points include a brief overview
of the causes of student underachievement,
how to promote achievement both at school
and at home, and practical tips and ideas
for working with children who underachieve.

Parents will then share and practice strategies
in small groups, to be concluded
with a question-and-answer session.

Reminder of Pet Owners’ Responsibilities
The following list of responsibilities for pet owners
living on Camp Zama, Sagamihara Family
Housing Area and Sagami Depot was released
by the Housing Management Division:
- Sponsors are responsible for cleaning the areas
used by their pets.
- If kept outside, the pet’s area must be policed daily
to prevent a buildup of trash and fecal material.

- Owners must clean up waste left by their pet
during walks.
- Fecal droppings must be disposed of in sealed
plastic bags (preferably double bags) and be
placed in garbage receptacles.
- Un-bagged waste must not be placed in garbage
receptacles.

starting in March, 2013 and extend through 2016.

Driving in Japan Classes
Are you a newcomer to Japan?
Need to obtain your local drivers permit?
Then sign-up for the "Driving in Japan” class
every Tuesday 8 a.m.
Safety classroom building 102, room A108
on Camp Zama.

Driving in Japan Classes
There is no sign-up or fees for the
course.
Please bring a valid US drivers license
and your military ID card.
The class is approximately 4 hours long.

Get a Kit
When disaster strikes, emergency responders
address the most critical needs and may not
even be able to get to an area until it is deemed
safe. While they work on behalf of the entire
community, it is your responsibility to ensure
your family’s well-being during times of crisis.
Emergency kits to sustain for 72 hours are an
essential tool for meeting that challenge.

Make a Plan
• Ensure everyone understands the plan, and practices.
• How to communicate during an emergency.
• Consider what to do, where to go, what to take.
• Plan for members with disabilities or special needs.
• Include pets in family plan.
• Report status through ADPAAS.
• Identify a continental U.S. contact.
