Documented efforts to enhance the development of children, especially to remediate the consequences of deprivation, have taken place since the early nineteenth century, when researchers learned that certain types of early experience were essential for the emergence of high intellectual functioning. More recently, studies of children in orphanages in the 1950s and 1960s initiated the investigation of what young children need to ensure healthy growth and development. The talk highlights the benefits of green space access in school settings for behavioral and performance outcomes. It presents two studies both carried out in deprived schools in Central Scotland; the first compares the effect of indoor versus outdoor education (delivered in a forest setting) on a range of wellbeing outcomes in teenagers; the second study explores the benefits to memory recall in early years pupils from curriculum tasks carried out indoors versus outdoors in a range of playground settings.

We all know that family engagement is important in a child’s success, and that teacher effectiveness is enhanced by family support. Yet the amount spent on FE is shockingly low in relation to its importance. This report explores not only the research on FE, but also the economics of family engagement and its effect on school budgets. I welcome you to review it and join the discussion.

SCENARIOS The cases you are about to view all depict scenarios from early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence. Pick one scenario as the focus of your paper/presentation in the unit 10 assignment. EARLY CHILDHOOD TOPICS Low Level Lead-Exposure and Children's Development A local elementary school Parent-Teacher Association in a large urban low SES school district requested that you provide a presentation on the impact of lead exposure on child development. Specifically the group is interested in knowing more about how lead exposure impacts cognitive, social, and physical development in early childhood and beyond. Additionally the group is interested in any intervention or prevention suggestions that are empirically supported. Autism and Theory of Mind A group of teachers working in a special education program have seen an increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder within their school. They've invited you to talk about common features of autism spectrum disorder and how it impacts cognitive, social and physical development in early childhood and beyond. Additionally the group is interested in learning more about prevailing theories related to autism such as theory of mind and any intervention or prevention suggestions that are empirically supported. Ethnic Differences in the Consequences of Physical Punishment A group of professionals for Child protective services has requested a presentation on ethnic differences as they relate to physical punishment. Specifically, they are wanting to better understand the role culture plays on parenting styles and how this impacts children's development in early childhood and beyond. Additionally the group is interested in any intervention or prevention suggestions to physical punishment that are empirically supported. MIDDLE CHILDHOOD TOPICS Family Stressors and Childhood Obesity A neighborhood center offers community programs for families who live in a lower SES diverse neighborhood. The center provides information on nutrition and healthy eating but obesity in the neighborhood children is major concern. The director has requested a presentation that goes beyond giving nutritional advice to increase awareness of the underlying stress the families are experiencing and how that is linked to overeating. Additionally the group is interested in any empirically supported intervention or prevention suggestions to help families manage related home-life stressors that contribute to potential childhood obesity. Children with ADHD The Parent-Teacher Association in an elementary school with a high percentage of African-American children has requested that the school provide a forum for the school community (parents and teachers) to discuss the increasing number of children who have been formally or informally labeled with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) within their school. They've invited you to talk about general characteristics of ADHD and how it impacts cogni.

This national study forms part of the series, 'Building Effective Research', edited by Andrew Murray and published by the Learning and Skills Research Centre (LSRC). This was commissioned as part of its strategy to enhance the impact of research within the post-16 (or learning and skills) sector, and was conducted by the LSRC plus a consortium of three universities: Leeds Metropolitan, St Andrew’s and Queen Mary’s, London. It comprises a review of relevant literature and five case studies of practice, as well as outcomes of workshops, where the findings were tested with people working in the sector.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
