Overview
   O Partnership and goals
O Examples of using technology for:
      O Collaborating, sharing and connecting
      O Enhancing student engagement/active
       learning
O Brainstorming and sharing of ideas (time
     permitting)

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell |stuckey-
Partnership & Selected Goals
                                          Research supervision;
                                          joint research; faculty
                                          & student exchange;
                                          technology

  Faculty & student exchange;   Student/staff collaboration;
service learning projects; service learning; program
  joint research endeavors evaluation; technology

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
What about technology?
      Problem  Technology??  PLAN

   TEHNOLOGY SHOULD BE TRANSPARENT--
IT SHOULD NOT DETRACT FROM STUDENT
LEARNING OR FROM OUR OTHER WORK!!

What are the technology-related goals of each
    partner?

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Technology Examples

          TO KEEP IN MIND:
       These are possibilities that
     require a sufficiently fortified
      technology infrastructure to
             support them!

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Collaborating and Connecting

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Collaborating, Sharing
              & Connecting
O Connecting people: Meetings, cross-college and
   intra-college student mentoring; cross-cultural
   teaching/writing; connecting students while doing
field experiences; using social media to build and
   maintain relationships
O Access of information and resources:
Students, faculty, and staff go to an online resource
   area to retrieve information (PULL)
O Dissemination of information and resources:
Students, faculty, and staff disseminate resources
and project outcomes to University community and
   partners (PUSH)

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Sample Tools and Uses
O Schoology – free/low cost learning management system; provide
course materials, interactions, small group work (pushing and pulling
info); would make a great tool for working with students doing
      fieldwork in schools
  O Web-conferencing – Skype, Anymeeting.com, Adobe
Connect, Elluminate for live online meetings
O EdModo – educator/student only social networking (similar to
      Facebook; great for staying connected)
O TeacherTube – education-focused video (similar to YouTube; great for
      pushing info)
O LinkedIn – professional social networking (great for staying
      connected)
O Twitter – microblogging; great for announcements (great for pushing
      info)
O Blogger – blogging; great for student reflection/writing activities (great
      for pushing info)

Enhancing Student Engagement
           and Active Learning

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
mickell.1@osu.edu
Enhancing Student Engagement
         & Active Learning
                  Illustrative example:
The Saga of the Intro Stats Course

    O Traditional, lecture-based approach
O Practice problems assigned for homework
    O Many anxious students
O More anxiety = less learning!
    O Unhappy teacher 

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
The Solution

O The “Flipped” classroom (Bergmann &
      Sams, 2012)
O The “inverted” classroom (Lage &
      Platt, 2000)

               Lecture  AT HOME
             “Homework”  IN CLASS

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Lecture & Practice Materials
O Video lecture (usu. 3-5 segments; 7-8 mins)
O EX: “Testing Research Questions - Part 1”
O PPT images and lecture script
 O Self-study Activity
O 5-10 recall questions on lecture content
 O Practice Activities
O Conceptual and application problems on content
O Discussion area for posting questions during lecture
O Access via Learning Management System - “Carmen”
   (Desire2Learn is the vendor)

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Let’s watch!!
Can you guess what
          happens at home?
    O Students watch the videos!!
O As many times as they like
       O At their own pace
O They can discuss with a study group
O They read along using the scripts
O They answer the self-study questions

O The students read, watch, process!

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Can you guess what
           happens in class?
    O Students work on deepening
      understanding and applying knowledge!
       O Collaboratively WITH peers
       O In a supportive environment
O With the teacher to provide just-in-time
         instruction and answer questions

O The teacher spends more time with
students! The students practice and learn!

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Summary

  TEHNOLOGY SHOULD BE TRANSPARENT--IT SHOULD
NOT DETRACT FROM STUDENT LEARNING OR FROM
               OUR OTHER WORK!!

So many possibilities when there is a
sufficiently fortified technology infrastructure
                to support them!
With our partnership, we could determine:
     Problem  Technology??  PLAN

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
We want YOUR ideas!!

List two ideas or initiatives for
      our future partnership.

Discuss with a partner and write
your ideas on the slip of paper

Prof. Tracey A. Stuckey-Mickell | stuckey-
Let’s build a great
partnership endeavor!!
