2. Why do we need to do
research on radiotherapy?
⢠Half of all men and a third of all women in Australia are
diagnosed with cancer
⢠1 in 6 people will receive radiotherapy in their lifetime
⢠Australians have the highest cancer survival rate in the world
⢠Improvements in radiotherapy are contributing
3. Who is the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group?
⢠Highest recruiting cancer clinical trials group in Australia
⢠2013 NSW Premiers Award for Outstanding Cancer Research:
âInnovation in Cancer Clinical Trialsâ
⢠Recruited our 13,000th patient in January 2014
⢠Celebrating 25 years in 2014
⢠80 hospitals across Australia, New Zealand and internationallyâŚ
and counting!
⢠93 trials run since 1989
4. Our focus
⢠Improving radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients using
cutting edge technology and techniques
⢠Improving quality of life for all cancer patients worldwide
⢠Giving rural and regional patients better access to
services, and opportunities to participate in a cancer research
trial

â˘
â˘
â˘
â˘
Cancer clinical trials
Introduce new treatment technology for Aust/NZ patients
Change treatment practices
Empower patients
Education for the community
8. Significant achievements
⢠Head and neck cancer breakthrough (TROG trial 07.03)
Patients who received daily humidification during radiotherapy
treatment spent nearly 50% fewer days in hospital to manage side
effects.
⢠Prostate cancer breakthrough (TROG 96.01)
The chances of cancer returning in the prostate could be reduced by
approximately 60% using hormone therapy prior to radiotherapy
treatment.
9. Moving forward
⢠Improving outcomes for rural, remote and indigenous patients
⢠Community engagement; raising awareness of radiotherapy
and clinical trials
⢠Creating technology to assist patients
(eg. TROG ClinTrial Refer app)
