Digital story telling is exactly what it implies. It is a story being told via technology.
The technology portion could be made up of 5 (or more) types of technology. The story teller could use plain text, graphics (or pictures), animations (moving pictures), audio, or video. A story teller does not necessarily use all of these but the more that are used the better the story can be.
Stories have four basic parts. First a story is written or told in a chronological order, that is it has a beginning, middle, and end. A story needs characters! A good story will have a change or conflict for the characters to solve. Finally a story will have an ending whether it be a tragedy or happy ending.
Students benefit from digital storytelling for many reasons, some of which we may not understand. First, the use of a different medium may get the students excited about writing or telling their story. This of course, leads to better engagement. When the story is finished the student has a project that is easily viewable and the student can show others easily through a blog or youtube.
