- Getting a new Facebook account is a very exciting thing.Facebook is a great tool for sharing news, pictures, invitations, and events.Facebook is a wonderful way to stay in touch with family and friends or to reconnect with friends from your past.
- With the excitement of having a new Facebook account, many new users make some very common mistakes.I will give you some tips that will help you to seem like a Facebook pro!First of all, it is very common to overshare information.Your friends/followers really don’t care about your each and every move.Status updated should be reserved to daily, weekly, or when ever you have something exciting to share.Avoid “taking a shower now,” “going to the grocery,” or “bathroom again.”For your safety, it is a good idea not to publicly post out of town trips. Those posts may be better suited to groups of individual instead of status posts that will display on all of your friends’ newsfeeds.
- You will find out soon enough. Some people are just downright annoying when it comes to Facebook activity.Many will use Facebook as a platform to push their political or religious beliefs. I have some friends who like everything that I post. There are times that I question if they have even read the post or just love to hit that like button!Liking someone’s post about having to put their pet to sleep is not the right way to use the like button.Let’s talk about comments for a second. Anything that your friends post or share will appear in your newsfeed. This does not mean that they sent it to you personally. Posting a status or sharing something is displayed on ALL of your friends’ newsfeeds. You do not have to feel an obligation to comment on everything that is posted.
- When posting comments on a status update, consider the feelings of others before posting comments.Your comments will be seen by all of the poster’s friends.Will your comments cause embarrassment?Teenagers and college students generally have self-esteem issues (they are always worried what others think of them)An innocent comment could be a tremendous embarrassment to themExample – when Mikey earned his Eagle Scout, one of the relatives congratulated him on Facebook. He was at school and was unable to delete the comment from his iPhone. He texted me his login information and begged me to delete that comment before his friends read that he was a Boy Scout.With any electronic form of communication, comments can be taken out of contextHere’s an example: Friend posts – My grandfather is in the hospital and is not doing very well. Your post – GreatThis can be misread meaning that you are happy the grandfather is in the hospital and not doing well“Great” in person, accompanied with a gesture could mean something different – there is no inflection or body language to go with your words, only text

It is a little embarrassing to college students to be scolded in public for all their friends to see(especially by a family member)How could this post be handled differently?Either say nothing or send this in a private message that will not embarrass Mikey to his friends.
- What is wrong with this post? Childhood nicknames are a big No-No! This is very embarrassing to a 19-year old girl.How could this post be handled differently?Simply saying cute would be enough. If you wanted to call her JaJa, it would be more appropriate in a message, but not a comment on her picture for all her friends (or boys she’s crushing on) can see.
- What is wrong with this post? Comment should have ended up after saying “Date both.” How could this post be handled differently?Although telling her to practice safe sex is important, it is embarrassing to for it to be a comment on her way…from her grandma.It is best to omit that comment or send her a private message talking about safe sex.
