Texas county one room school house tour
1. Welcome A Driving Tour of One-Room School Houses in Texas County, Mo.
2. The Texas County, Mo., Genealogical &Historical Society has a document labeled “1924 School Districts, Texas County, Mo.” The document lists 140 rural school districts that are one-room schools. There are six “High Schools-3rd class, including Raymondville, Ozark, White Rock, Elk Creek, Shady Grove, and Gravel Point. Plato is listed as “High School-2nd Class.” The list concludes with four “High Schools-1st Class,” which include Summersville, Cabool, Licking, and Houston.
21. ENJOY YOUR DRIVING TOUR! This One-Room School Driving Tour was prepared by Peter Maki for the Top of the Ozarks RC&D in December 2010. There are one-room schools still to be located and added to this tour. Only a few of the schools are community centers with the majority of the schools located on private property and several being private residences. Please respect the owner’s privacy.

Located on the NE corner of Hwy. E and Tiffany Drive three miles north of Houston, Oak Hill School is a beautiful example of WPA stone craftsmanship. It is a private residence.
Go north of Raymondville on Hwy. 137, west of Oscar on Clayton Road. Mt. Vernon School is now a community center and is well maintained. It has its original bell tower.
Located east of Houston on Hwy. H between Hwy. DD and 137, Tyrone School is now a community center. It is in good condition.
Located south of Houston on Cross Road just north of Malberg Road, east of Hwy. 63, Pleasant Grove School is now a private residence. It was built by the WPA and is another example of fine stone craftsmanship.
Located on Hwy. MM and Fowler Drive NW of Cabool, Fowler School is now used as a church.
Located at Gravel Point and Hillside Roads NW of Cabool, Gravel Point School is a private residence. It was built by the WPA and was a “Job High School.”
Located in a pasture along Hwy. M across from Bado Road north of Cabool, Lone Star School looks quite abandoned.
Located north of Cabool off Hwy. M, take Barnum Drive to Rackett Ridge Drive. The building is deteriorating rapidly.
Located on Hwy. 38/M west of Houston is Alice School. The Maxine Allen family has lovingly restored the interior of the school. Maxine has the original teachers desk and chair and the students desks in storage. They hope to restore the interior soon.
Located behind the church at Astoria Road and Hwy. M just east of Roby, Number One School is still standing but quite abandoned.
South of Plato off Hwy. AE and just off Long Valley Road is Long Valley School. Built by the WPA, this is a stunning example of fine rock craftsmanship. It is a private residence.
West of Success on Hwy. M is Timber Ridge School. It was built by the WPA. It has an addition and is now a private residence.
Located a short distance west of Success on Gladden Road off Hwy. M is Gladden School. Built by the WPA it is a fine example of ‘spider web’ raised grout and field stone rock work.
Located west of Success and north of Hwy. M on Turley Road is Liberty School. It is in dangerously poor condition.
Located ½ mile east of Lynch Road between Bucyrus and Ellis Prairie is Pine Ridge School. It is on private property.
Located west of Simmons on Hwy. Z is Oak Grove School. It is now a community center and in excellent condition.
Located just east of Houston on Brown Hill Road, off Brushy Creek Road, is Brown Hill School. It even has the original playground equipment! It is a private residence.
North of Cabool on Hwy. M, proceed west of Bado on Murr Road for three miles to the school. Murr school has not had anything done to it since classes ended. The owner would like assistance in restoring the school building.
