E5 is more than a nice fringe.
E5 is a meeting place for everyone who likes to make culture & art education a part of the curriculum and it’s absolutely more than a nice fringe. It offers much more than teaching students how to spend their free time in a proper and sophisticated way. Culture is always there en belongs to everyone. It’s a part of everyday life and everyday attitude. E5 is a main street going through all educations and trainings and makes it possible to make a long or short trip; you can join the traffic and leave whenever you like.

E5 is more than a nice fringe
E5 is a meeting place for everyone who likes to make culture & art education a part of the
curriculum and it’s absolutely more than a nice fringe. It offers much more than teaching
students how to spend their free time in a proper and sophisticated way. Culture is always
there en belongs to everyone. It’s a part of everyday life and everyday attitude. E5 is a main
street going through all educations and trainings and makes it possible to make a long or
short trip; you can join the traffic and leave whenever you like.
E5 helps teachers and students in five different ways, in accordance with five different
directions: theatre, music, dance, language [debating & poetry] and visual arts education,
e.g. film and exhibitions. Most of the activities take place in our professionally equipped
theatre, The King’s Room in building E. But we can also use ordinary classrooms or outside
places and even in the community, behind the walls of our college.
E5 works together with the trainee posts of our theatre school. The second-year students
have to do all kinds of jobs and practical trainings for three days a week. For E5 they make
all kinds of performances, which we can put on our own stage for the other students of our
college.
Every year about 2.500 students visit our theatre; sometimes it is the first time in their live
they visit a performance. The students from the theatre school also give workshops about
presenting yourself, debating and improvising; sometimes they work on themes like how to
react to aggressive people or rude customers.
Next week we have a performance about being diabetic. It’s coproduction with
www.sugarfriends.nl ; they asked us to make a performance to make students more aware
about what it means being diabetic for a young student. After the performance we will talk
together about the problems and possibilities. One of the students of our colleges will tell
about her every day experiences.
We are also working on performances about sexuality and homosexuality in order to give the
visitors an artistic performance and an insight in another world and to create an opportunity
to talk about issues that are controversial and sometimes even a taboo.
E5 does not only offer opportunities to be a cultural consumer, but it also gives everybody a
possibility to develop their own talent. Students who like to work in a creative way, like to be
on stage, like to dance, sing or play will have the chance to develop themselves as a part of
their own curriculum. E5 removes the fencings between different educations.
