Presidential Election of 1824

John Quincy Adams (Massachusetts)

Andrew Jackson (Tennessee)

William H. Crawford (Georgia)

Henry Clay (Kentucky)
Election Results
Results: Translated.
No candidate won a majority of Electoral Votes, although
Jackson did win the popular vote, and won a plurality (more
than the others, but less than 50% of the total) of the electoral
votes.

The election went to the House of Representatives, where
candidate Henry Clay was the Speaker of the House.

With no real chance of winning, Clay threw his support to
Adams, and Adams was elected. In return, Adams named
Clay the Secretary of State, which had been considered a
stepping stone to the Presidency.

Jackson and his supporters cried foul and charged Clay and
Adams with making a "Corrupt Bargain."
