11. Substance abuse Substance abuse is often a secondary outcome if ADD is not identified and treated. Social and emotional immaturity are chronic. Poor peer acceptance and loneliness tend to increase with age and with the obvious display of symptoms. Children with primary inattention tend to have academic problems only.
