Disturbing Truck Accident Statistics
It’s a hard statistic to hear, but every year truck accidents kill more than
4,000 people and injure more than 80,000. Recently, another grim statistic
came out—30 million American drivers are sharing the road with more than
200,000 trucks that have been deemed unsafe. Safety violations have been
issued to at least 28,000 trucking companies. These violations could have
serious ramifications and cause some very serious accidents. These
violations were for brakes that weren’t functioning properly, worn tires that
needed to be replaced, dangerously overweight loads, under-qualified
drivers or drivers with substance abuse problems. As bad as it sounds,
some of these trucking companies set their salaries up in such a way that
the drivers are urged to exceed safe speed limits and to drive past the
recommended number of hours on the road. It’s all about money and time
is money in the trucking industry! But it also puts public safety at serious
risk.
Even More Numbers About Truck Accidents
Reading these statistics is bad enough, but here’s another fact: Less than
5% of all vehicles on the road consist of trucks, but yet more than 12% of
all fatal accidents are caused by trucks in some way or another. This
means a disturbingly high likelihood of drivers being seriously injured or
killed by trucks that have been found to be unsafe. Most of these accidents
could be prevented if the trucking companies would strictly adhere to safety
regulations and standards, rather than taking shortcuts in order to increase
their profits.
While we are in no way trying to cast a dark shadow on one of America’s
largest and best industries, it is necessary to point out the facts. In 2009, a
four month notice was given to trucking companies across the nation that
the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance would be doing thorough
inspections of trucks. This gave the companies ample time to address and
repair any safety or mechanical issues in their trucks. But shockingly,
almost 23% of all trucks in these roadside inspections were still found to be
in violation of many safety regulations, and therefore were deemed unsafe
to be on the road.
