An analysis of candidate mentions in social media and major news sources

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Based on the analytics performed over one month, the following insights are observed:
• Out of over 12 million mentions of the Republican
candidates observed in social media and major news
sources, Mike Huckabee ranks 10th among the candidates.
• From June 24 – July 24, there are 178K mentions of
Huckabee in social media and major news sources.
Discussions peak on June 26.
• Discussions of Huckabee occur with mentions of his home
state of Arkansas, his political campaign as a Republican
presidential candidate, his conservative views, his
responses to recent events (e.g., Supreme Court ruling
supporting gay marriage), poll results, and other
Republican and Democratic candidates.
• Top influencers in mentions of Huckabee are explored.
Yahoo leads the top news sources, followed by CNN.
However, conservative news media, such as Breitbart News
Network and NewsMax are also top sources.
• Twitter is a top source of mentions for all Republican
candidates. Eighty-seven (87%) of mentions of Huckabee
(155K) occur on Twitter.
• Top influencers on Twitter for Huckabee are dominated by
media sources (e.g., ABC’s NightLine, Fox News, The
Chicago Tribune, CNN) and journalists (e.g., Sean Hannity).
• Candidates are on Twitter also. Huckabee obtains almost 6K
new followers per month. When analyzing who’s tweeting
the most, Huckebee is in the lower quartile, with 139
tweets.
• People are talking to the Republican candidates on Twitter -
over 3.8M tweets. Huckabee ranks 10th in tweets received
during the analysis timeframe.

REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE SCORECARD
Mentions of Republican candidates in social media and major news sources from June 24-July 24 were examined. Who’s most mentioned? Trump leads
with 8.3M mentions, followed by Cruz (729K), Walker (564K), and Bush (527K). Who’s mentioned the least? Pataki (31K). Trump has the highest number
of daily mentions at 418K, followed by Walker (155K) and Christie (119K). Republican candidates are most mentioned on Twitter. Whose mentions have
the highest positive sentiment? Kasich (32%), followed by Cruz (30%). Whose mentions have highest negative sentiment? Trump (26%), followed by
Perry and Graham (25% each). Huckabee ranks 10th in number of mentions.

Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. Twitter is the dominant source of

Tweets posted by and to Republican candidates from June 24-July 24 were examined. Who’s tweeting the most? Trump leads with 855 tweets, followed by
Walker, Cruz, Paul, and Graham. Who’s tweeting the least? Perry (97) How many people are talking to the candidates on Twitter? Over 3.8M - Trump leads
(2.2M), with Cruz (326K) and Walker (210K) following. Perry ranks 8th in number of tweets received, but ranks last among candidates tweeting. Graham
ranks high on tweeting (5th) but low on tweets received (14th). Bush ranks 4th in tweets received, but only 11th in postings. Huckebee is in the lower quartile

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Based on the analytics performed over one month, the following insights are observed: • Out of over 12 million mentions of the Republican candidates observed in social media and major news sources, Mike Huckabee ranks 10th among the candidates. • From June 24 – July 24, there are 178K mentions of Huckabee in social media and major news sources. Discussions peak on June 26. • Discussions of Huckabee occur with mentions of his home state of Arkansas, his political campaign as a Republican presidential candidate, his conservative views, his responses to recent events (e.g., Supreme Court ruling supporting gay marriage), poll results, and other Republican and Democratic candidates. • Top influencers in mentions of Huckabee are explored. Yahoo leads the top news sources, followed by CNN. However, conservative news media, such as Breitbart News Network and NewsMax are also top sources. • Twitter is a top source of mentions for all Republican candidates. Eighty-seven (87%) of mentions of Huckabee (155K) occur on Twitter. • Top influencers on Twitter for Huckabee are dominated by media sources (e.g., ABC’s NightLine, Fox News, The Chicago Tribune, CNN) and journalists (e.g., Sean Hannity). • Candidates are on Twitter also. Huckabee obtains almost 6K new followers per month. When analyzing who’s tweeting the most, Huckebee is in the lower quartile, with 139 tweets. • People are talking to the Republican candidates on Twitter - over 3.8M tweets. Trump leads with 8.3M mentions, followed by Cruz (729K), Walker (564K), and Bush (527K). Who’s mentioned the least? Pataki (31K). Trump has the highest number of daily mentions at 418K, followed by Walker (155K) and Christie (119K). Republican candidates are most mentioned on Twitter. Whose mentions have the highest positive sentiment? Kasich (32%), followed by Cruz (30%). Whose mentions have highest negative sentiment? Trump (26%), followed by Perry and Graham (25% each). Trump leads with 855 tweets, followed by Walker, Cruz, Paul, and Graham. Who’s tweeting the least? Perry (97) How many people are talking to the candidates on Twitter? Over 3.8M - Trump leads (2.2M), with Cruz (326K) and Walker (210K) following. Perry ranks 8th in number of tweets received, but ranks last among candidates tweeting.
