TCP/IP is a suite of protocols that governs how data is transmitted across networks. It evolved from the ARPANET in the 1970s and became the standard protocol allowing different networks to communicate. TCP/IP breaks data into packets, addresses those packets so the network knows where to send them, and verifies all packets were received to reassemble the original data.
