1. Lesson 5: Using Web 2.0 Application—Making a
Contribution to the World Wide Web
Community
Goals of this lesson: This lesson will familiarize the user with one
common Web 2.0 application—Wikispaces, or more specifically the
BOSCO­Uganda Wikispace
­The user will learn what a Wikispace is used for and why it is
considered to be an important Web 2.0 application
­The user will become a member of the BOSCO Wikispace, enabling
him or her to make a personal contribution to the site through
posting of text, documents, photos, links, or other relevant materials
­The user will learn how to edit pages relevant to his/her location,
i.e., users in Pagak will learn how to edit the Pagak Wikispace page
as to benefit and educate people in their location

2. A. What is a Wikispace?
A Wikispace site is a fully editable webpage for one or many communities. It is a
place on the web where community members can come together to add their own
content to its pages. When individuals from different locations can come together to
meet on the web and add their own content (i.e., postings), we call this Web 2.0
collaboration.
The purpose of the BOSCO Wikispace site is to encourage BOSCO users at each
location to empower their own local community using the Internet. On the BOSCO
Wikispace, users will find a home page for their location. That means Pagak has a
page, Coope has a page, Pabo has a page, etc.
Users in each location should become familiar with how to post content on the
BOSCO Wikispace. Users may post any (appropriate) information that they want on
this site. As an example, we have already seen some users post farming proposals,
some teachers are journaling (blogging) about life during the war, some people are
adding photos from their location, others are adding short stories and news…and
the list goes on and on!
Remember these pages are on the Internet for everyone to see around the world.
This is the way that people around the world can get to know who you are! Act
wisely and responsibly and don’t be afraid to add your own content to the spaces of
the BOSCO Wikispace.
Task: Go to www.bosco­uganda.wiksipaces.com on your web browser to open
the BOSCO Wikispace page

3. B. Sign up for BOSCO Wikispaces and request to be a member
For privacy reasons, you must first sign up and then request to be a member before
you will be allowed to post your own content on the pages.
Task: Sign up for BOSCO Wikispaces by creating an account (see Lesson 4 for
instructions)
­After going to www.bosco‐uganda.wikispaces.com , click on the “Sign In” link at the
top right hand of the page
Task: Now that you have a username and password you will still need to
request to be a member of the BOSCO Wikispace before you will be permitted
to post on the site. Please request to be a member of the BOSCO Wikispace by
following these steps:
‐After signing in, click on the “Join this Wiki” link at the top left hand side of the page

‐Then add a comment of introduction in the box before pressing “Request
Membership”
Your request will be approved by BOSCO staff. This may take a day or two as
it will be sent via their email so that they can approve you as a member.
Once approved, you are free to begin posting information on the BOSCO
Wikispace

5. C. Editing Wikispace Pages, and adding your own page
Once you have registered for Wikispaces and have requested to be a member of
the BOSCO Wikispace, you will be able to post your own content onto the BOSCO
Wikispaces. Many people post stories, photos, proposals for community
development projects, journal entries, and many other things. You can also edit
pages that other people have posted on. Remember that this space is your own,
so make it great! Each BOSCO location (e.g. Pagak, Pabo, Coope, etc.) has a link
on the left hand side of the Wikispace which will direct your to your Wikispace
homepage.
Task: User will edit a previously existing Wikispace page.
‐Go to www.bosco‐uganda.wikispaces.com and sign into your Wikispace
account.
‐After signing in, click on the link for your location—let’s pretend that I am in
Pagak for this lesson, so I will want to edit within the Pagak homepage.
You will begin to see the Pagak homepage. After the page loads, as an
example page to edit, I will click on the first link at the top left of the
Pagak page (“Pagak BOSCO Users…”)

When this page opens up, you can begin editing its contents. Editing means
changing the text, adding to the text, correcting the text, and adding links,
photos, or other items. To edit any page in Wikispaces, click “Edit this Page” at
the top of the window.

After clicking “Edit This Page” the page will load and you will see a
tool bar on the top allowing you to make various changes to the page.
Let’s start with the easiest change to make: adding text
Editing the text is very simple. You just use the mouse and cursor to add
text in the same way you would if it was a Word document. As an
example, let’s add my name to the page and a sentence about myself.
Once you are finished editing or adding text
to the page, you will want to click “Save”
located on the right hand side of the toolbar above.
After clicking “Save,” the webpage will load and will publish (show) the
changes you have made.

above. I simply placed the cursor there
and began typing. It is that simple!

8. Task: User will add a photo to the page
Adding photos is also very easy. Navigate to the page you want to edit and
then click “Edit This Page” just as you did above.
Click on the “Image” icon in the toolbar
After clicking on the icon (picture) a popup window will emerge. Wikispace
stores photos on the web in its own library. If your photo is not yet in the
BOSCO Wikispace library, you will need to upload one from your computer.
Click on “Upload Files”

9. • After clicking “Upload Files” you will click on “Browse.” This will open
another popup window on your computer. At that point you must browse
through your computers files and select the picture file that you want to
upload.
Click on the file you want to upload and then press “Select” or “Open” at the
bottom right of the popup window.

10. After clicking “Open” you will be taken back to the upload menu; click
“Upload”
Uploading might take a few minutes; be patient. You will know that it
is done uploading when you see a small version of your photo appear
in the window.
Once your photo is uploaded, it will now be in the BOSCO Wikispaces library of
images. Click on “Insert Files” in the above window
You must remember the file name of your photo. In this case, my photo is
called “Pagak.jpg”; Click on the “P” at the bottom of the library to be taken to
the place where all photos beginning with letter “P” are stored.

11. Once you find your image on the page, simply double click and it will be
automatically inserted into your Wikispace page that you are currently
editing
Adjust the size of the photo inside the Wikispace page you are editing by
clicking on the “+” or “‐“ button. Smaller photos take less time to load and a
preferable.
Click “Save” on the toolbar and your image will be saved on the Wikispace
page. Congratulations, you have just published a photo on the web!

12. D. Adding a new page to the BOSCO Wikispaces
Similar to editing a pre existing page, you can also add an entirely new page to the
Wikispaces. This is useful if you want to make a new page that will solely contain
information on your organization or program, for example.
User task: Create your own, unique, new page in BOSCO Wikispaces
• Go to www.bosco‐uganda.wikispaces.com and sign into the BOSCO
Wikispace
• As an example, I will click on the “Pagak” link on the left side of the page;
you will then be taken to the Pagak homepage
• We want to add a link to a new page under the Pagak homepage; First you
must click “Edit this Page” near the top of the window
• After clicking “Edit this Page” bring the cursor to a place on the page where
you want to add a link to a new page

• When the cursor is blinking, write the name of the text that you want to make
into a link. For example, I am making a Pagak News link so I will simply
write, “Pagak News”

• To make your text into a link—also known as a new page—simply highlight
the text you have just written with your mouse
• After highlighting the text that you want to make into a link to a new page,
bring the mouse up to the toolbar and click on the icon.
• A popup window will emerge after clicking on the icon. When it appears,
simply click, “Add Link” and your link will become active, leading to the
creation of a new Wikispace page

• After you have finished this, click “Save” on the toolbar at the top; Your link
will now become active on the BOSCO Wikispace
• After clicking “Save” the page will load normally. When it loads click on your
new link to be taken to a new, fresh page that you can begin to
add content on
• When you open your new link a new page will appear that says, “This page
doesn’t exist yet. You can create it by clicking the “edit button.” Click the link
the says, “edit button” to begin creating content for your new page.

• After clicking the “Edit” button, you will see the following screen emerge:
• Begin typing any text, photos, links or other content that you
want to make a part of this new page. When you are done adding content to
the page, click “Save” on the far rights side of the tool bar
After clicking “Save” your newly created page will be displayed.
Congratulations, you have just created a new page in the BOSCO Wikispaces.
To edit this page in the future, follow the instructions above for editing pages
or adding content such as text, links, and photos.

17. Practical Exercise: Users should spend half an hour on their own trying to edit
Wikispace pages by adding content, links, text, photos. Also users should try
adding new pages to their sites location in the Wikispace.
