Chapter 9- Diversity –Communication: Making Relationships
Look up diversity in a dictionary and select a definition, write the definition you selected.
How would you expand on the definition?
Diversity means the state of being diverse; The state in which a person changes within the
environment they are in.
What is cultural competence? How can you develop it?
The ability to understand and appreciate differences among people and adjust behavior in
ways that enhance, rather than detract from, relationships and communications. Value
diversity, identify and evaluate personal perceptions and attitudes, be aware of
discrimination and hate crimes build cultural knowledge adapt to diverse cultures.
How can you communicate effectively?
Adjust to communication styles, know how to give and give and take criticism and
understand body language.
How can you make the most of personal relationships?
Use positive relationships strategies, approach people and conversations with emotional
intelligence, if you want a friend, be a friend, spend time with people you respect and
admire, work through tensions, take risks, find a dating pattern that suits you, if a
relationship fails, find a way to cope, plug into communication technology without losing
touch, manage conflict, manage anger and avoid destructive relationships.
