life depended on the solution, I would spend
the first 55 minutes determining the proper
question to ask… for once I know the proper
question, I could solve the problem in less
than five minutes.”

I believe that education and learning is the key to changing the world and making it a better place for all – it’s how we make ourselves “better” and it is a process that never stopsAll of you here play a key role in this and for that I would like to commend you and encourage you to continue the good work that you are doing
Nobody got a zero right? That’s because we all have the ability to be creative – we are born with it – it’s a myth that you are “either a creative person, or you aren’t”Just watch kids play or remember how you used to play as a child (image of kids playing with a cardbox box or the wrapping paper at Christmas instead of the actual toy)

But there is another myth that needs to be dispelled
Creativity is about coming up with the big idea. Innovation is about executing the idea — converting the idea into a successful business.
Some people like to say that innovation = creativity + actionBut as we have seen from the noodle cooler and the banana cutter this isn’t true, they were creative and the inventors took action
Creativity is about coming up with the big idea. Innovation is about executing the idea — converting the idea into a successful business. What is the missing link between creativity and innovation? The skills - Critical thinking skills and action/doing
We have already discussed about creativity.Creativity is about coming up with the big idea. It’s not really a problem because as we have already seen everybody is creative

Critical thinking skills because they make sure that you are working on the right/real problemThis is the foundation of all problem solving – and innovation is about solving problems
Innoavtions don’t have to be complecated

ActionHow many people here have had a great idea for a product or business? How many of you have actually taken action on this? Not many right? Well don’t worry, it is something that we all suffer from because of fear, fear of failure and being judged
Currently most education systems around the world are focused towards “paper tests” Paper tests are good at testing our ability to remember, retain and regurgitate information (our knowledge?)
We could easily teach our students the definitions of innovation, the steps of the design thinking methodology and then test them on their knowledge (briefly introduce them to the design thinking process)BUT this does not make them innovators – remember one of the key skills for innovation is ACTION
What’s important is your ability to apply/think and that different situations require different approaches to problem solving this is where creativity and innovation comes - yes for a test but on facts and mathematical questions rote learning is important but more important is how to apply them to the real worldExamples of ambiguous real life problemsThe fact that many of the jobs that we are training our kids for don’t even exist yetFor innovation to happen we must take action, we must apply our skills to the world around us, otherwise all we are left with are great ideas but the same old problems

Set your students fun challengesDon’t provide much guidance or information – let them discover it for themselves
School that innovated the floor mat for teachersThey saw a problemUsed their young creative minds to think of solutionsThen they took action and made a prototype
I want you to quickly write down one thing that you have learnt from this seminar that you can “prototype/test” in the next week back in your work placeIf you are a teacher then it could be trying a new method or teaching your studentsIf you aren’t a teacher it could be a new way that you want to interact with your colleagues or a new way of approaching projects and problemsAnother Einstein quote that is often repeated is that “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”I challenge you to try something different
