2. How to create a Works Cited Sheet..
There are 5 main types of
bibliographic styles out there, and
you will be using MLA today.
Included in your package today is a
copy of how to do an MLA style Works
Cited Sheet.
3. How to create a Works Cited Sheet.
Why do we need to learn to do any
type of bibliography sheet?
You need to let the reader know
where the information came from in a
paper, because often the information
your are using is not your own.
If you do not do this it is called
plagiarism and the penalty can be
extreme.
4. How to create a Works Cited Sheet.
There are some basic steps to remember:
1) Listing all sources used to help you write an
essay is called a “Works Consulted” sheet.
2) Listing only those sources you directly
quoted or paraphrased is called a “Works
Cited” sheet.
5. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
There are 2 times that you are to cite a
source:
1) If you take something and use it word
for word in your paper, you must place it
in quotation marks “ and “ then you
must place a reference with it. In MLA
you need to put a ( after the quote, then
fill in some valuable information about
where the quotation came from, then
end with a ).

2) If you take information from a
source and put it into your owns
words – this still does not mean it is
your idea. Although you are not
directly quoting you must still
acknowledge that this is not your
work. Again in MLA you need to put
a ( after the quote, then fill in some
valuable information about where the
idea came from, then end with a ).
7. How to create a Works Cited Sheet.
Each type of source you use requires you to
use a little different information in the
brackets.
Every single one of the sources that you
use in a quote or a paraphrase in your
essay go in the Works Cited sheet.
8. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
You SHOULD be looking at more sources
than you quoted from to give your
sources credibility. It is like you use a
source but get others sources to make
sure it is accurate.
All the sources you used go on the
Works Consulted sheet.
There SHOULD be more sources on a
Works Consulted Sheet than a Works
Cited sheet!
9. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
There are some simple rules to follow no
matter which MLA sheet you are handing
in.
ALWAYS list your sources alphabetically
by authors LAST name. If there is no
author then you use the first FULL word of
the article title; note A, AN, AND and THE
do not count.

Sheet.
Example:
Boogey, Tony. “Halloween Horrors”. Movie Reviews.
(October 2008). Web. Sept. 16, 2010.
“A Driving Law Changes”. The Hamilton Spectator. July 16,
2010. A6. Print.
Note the B comes before D (and we ignore the A in the
second title).
11. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
Boogey, Tony. “Halloween Horrors”. Movie Reviews.
(October 2008). Web. Sept. 16, 2010.
“A Driving Law Changes”. The Hamilton Spectator. July 16,
2010. A6. Print.
Also note that the first line is all the way to the margin, whereas the
rest of the lines for the same source are tabbed over once. That
makes it easier for the reader to distinguish where one source finishes
and the next one starts.

Sheet.
Boogey, Tony. “Halloween Horrors”. Movie Reviews. (October
2008). Web. Sept. 16, 2010.
“A Driving Law Changes”. The Hamilton Spectator. July 16, 2010.
A6. Print.
And finally note – each line needs to be double spaced –
not just between sources but within sources themselves.
13. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
If you are quoting directly from a
website or database on the web –
use the author as you would with a
print source. Depending on the
source you may or may not have a
page number. If you do, provide it
and if you don’t have one, then
leave it out.
14. Example (with page number):
Szarak, J.P. “Love in the Stars”. Space. 14.3 (2006):16-19.
Web. 22 Sept 2010.
Example (without page number):
Price, T. “Doing Research Right”. Ontario Librarian. 12
(2009). Web. 04 Sept 2010.
15. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
In the case of on-line material you are only to
provide the first few words of whatever will
appear first in the Works Cited Sheet you are
creating. You no longer include the URL in any
of the actual information – UNLESS your
teacher says to.
Instead you must list what type of source you
are using.
Hands on stuff – Print
WebPages, online encyclopaedia – Web
TV shows - video
16. How to create a Works Cited
Sheet.
EVERY single source has a little different
way of writing up the information – PAY
ATTENTION to the booklet you have been
given as it shows EXACTLY how each
source is to be used!
If all else fails – ASK THE LIBRARIAN! That
is what we are here for.

And remember:
No matter what you do –
quoting and paraphrasing
TOO much is always better
than not doing it enough.
