Breast milk provides all the nutrients and antibodies babies need to be healthy. It protects infants from disease and infection. Exclusive breastfeeding for at least four months lowers risks for allergies, diarrhea, SIDS, obesity, and other illnesses. Breastfeeding also benefits cognitive development as research shows higher IQs in breastfed children.

Breast milk is the best food for baby because
it includes all of the nutrients for baby needs
in forms that are easy for her to digest.
The milk a mother makes during the first few
day after birth is called colostrums. Colostrum
is very special because it provides your baby
with just the right nutrients and contains lots
of antibodies too.

• Allergy prevention, there is some evidence that
breastfeeding protects babies born to families with a
history of allergies, compared to those babies who are
fed either a standard cow’s milk based formula or a
soy formula.
• In these “at risk” families, breastfed babies generally
had a lower risk of milk allergy, atopic dermatitis
(commonly known as eczema), and wheezing early in
life, if they were exclusively breastfed for at least
four months.

• Sit straight up in your (comfortable) chair. Place the pillow on your
lap. Have the glass of water within easy reach. Put on some relaxing
music.
• Put your baby on the pillow. Take off his wraps so he’s easier to
manage and stays awake.
• When nursing with your right breast, hold your baby with your left
arm. With his bottom tucked under your elbow, place your left arm
along his back. With the palm of your hand on the baby’s upper
back and shoulders, your thumb and index finger should make a
comfortable “C” around the base of his skull.
• Lying horizontally on the pillow, with his head at the same level as
his bottom, your baby should be tummy to tummy with you with his
nose opposite your nipple.

17. Basic feeding routines and times
• Newborns need to be fed 8-12 times every 24
hours. Once you’ve got the hang of it, most
feeds take 20 minutes or so. But in the early
days and weeks, they might take up to an hour.
And as your baby grows, the time baby takes
to feed will reduce, as will the number of
feeds.
