Snow Sports Trends for 2014/2015 - Denver skiing
The SnowSports Industry of America ("SIA") recently held their SnowShow 2014 at the Colorado
Convention Center in Denver, Colorado and the OnSnow Demo Days at Copper Mountain. At the
SnowShow and Demo Days, manufacturers' representatives and industry experts detailed the latest
slopeside innovations to look out for during the upcoming 2014/2015 snow season. Following are
highlights of the show:
1. Existence, Essence, Confluence, and Dissonance
The experts from Stylesight suggested these main themes for outdoor clothing design during the
next ski/snowboard/snow sports season. These themes draw upon the colors of the arctic and the
deep woods, bringing in ice blue, pale green and light gray colors of the sea and snow, together with
woodsy colors of deep brown and black. They predict an eclectic mix of colors drawing from
different cultural influences including tribal prints, "patchwork" styles, and decorative details like
swirls, fur, beading, and laser-cut designs. Moonboots are back and better than ever, with
embellishments like rhinestones and fur!
2. Slim and Sleek
The apparel trend for the upcoming 2014/12015
ski and snowboard season veers towards forms
that fit closer to the body and use extra-thin
layers of insulation. For instance, a Goldwin
jacket weighing less than a hanger, Obermeyer's
new "Snowga" line and Under Armour's Coldgear
Infrared line use advanced ceramic technology or
stretch insulation to retain warmth with nominal weight.
3. Protection
The film Crash Reel was featured during the SnowShow. Anyone who has seen or heard about it is
probably already wearing a helmet. Helmets, which are more comfortable and protective than ever,
are now practically essential for anyone engaging in outdoor snow activities. Organizations like the
Love Your Brain foundation and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons encourage helmet
usage.
4. Abundant Technology
From Nike's boots with LCD swooshes, to Zeal Optics' goggles with built-in HD cameras, technology
has invaded the mountain! Zeal's goggles feature one-button technology on the side of your goggles
with a camera right in the center, so you don't have to unzip your pockets and take your gloves off to
fiddle around with your phone or a helmet cam to capture the best parts of your day.
5. Networking on the Mountain
All Epic Pass holders already know about the cool EpixMix app, which allows you to track vertical
feet, earn "pins" for various accomplishments on the mountain, and compare your stats to your
friends. Now there's something called spinlister.com which allows you to rent gear from individuals
nearby. It seems like a good alternative to buying a whole bunch of gear that you may only use once
or twice a year. . . sort of like airbnb for sports gear. This app and website is new, so let's keep an
eye on it to see how it evolves in the next year or so.
