1.0 Introduction to Department of Civil
Engineering
 Department of Civil Engineering is one of the
six departments of the Faculty of
 Engineering, General Sir John Kotelawala
 Defence University.
 B.Sc. Engineering Degree in Civil Engineering
 is offered by the Department.

                                                  3
What is Civil Engineering?
Civil engineering is a professional
engineering discipline that deals with

 Construction

 Maintenance

of the built environment

                                         4
Built Environment
 Created by man with or
 without the aid of
 natural environment

 Includes everything
 from simple housing to
 entire cities, and even
 man-made outdoor
 environments

                           5
Built environment includes,
  Buildings

  Parks & recreation areas

  Roads, Highways & Railways

  Bridges

  Airports

 Harbours, ports & other coastal structures

 Irrigation systems including canals, dams etc.

 Power plants & Transmission Towers

 Water Treatment & distribution Plants

 Waste treatment & disposal Plants etc.
                                                    6
Civil Engineering
 Oldest branch of engineering after military
 engineering.
 First engineers were military engineers, combining
 military and civil skills.
 Later, Civil Engineering developed as a separate
 discipline.
 Many of the important things in our lives that we
take for granted are products of civil engineering.
                                                       7
