This document demonstrates how to create a Data Vault model in a few steps using data modeling tools. It shows how to take an existing ER diagram, create a Data Vault extension to identify business keys and hub and satellite concepts, and then analyze the model to automatically generate a new Data Vault model with hubs marked in blue, satellites in yellow, and links in red. The new Data Vault model is generated in less than one second, allowing analysts to speed up the time spent creating EDW models.

• Take a classical ER diagram :

- Create an extension (in this case we created a « DV »
extension); this extension must permit to identify
« business keys »,
notions of Hubs and
satellite (see DV theory).

- Locate Business Keys in source model (you can also
use automatic data profiling to help your analyst in
this step)

- If you create the extension from scratch, add
contextual menu and script following model analysis
algorithm as described (see slide 3); if you use our
extension, do nothing  it’s done.

8. • Execute the algorithm, in our case just right
click, choose « DV » then « Analyse ».

• On source models, few colors are added and new
extended attributes are positionned (« is Satellite », « Is
Hub » …).
