The NPPA (National Press Photographers Association)
is a nonprofit professional organization for
photojournalists, videographers, documentarians, and
related media professionals. Established in 1946 and
based in Durham, North Carolina, the NPPA mission is
to advance the field of visual journalism. Secondary
missions for the NPPA are to develop the professional
community and advocate on behalf of news
photographers, videographers, and multimedia
journalists working independently or for larger media
companies or news organizations. Members are held to
a high standard of professionalism in visual journalism,
and the NPPA offers educational opportunities, training
workshops, and annual contests for its 10,000-plus
members. For nearly 60 years, the NPPA has served as
an outspoken advocate for freedom of the press
nationwide.
