Mebendazole Tablets for Treatment of Pinworm, Whipworm, Roundworm and Hookworm Infections
- 1. Mebendazole Tablets
Mebendazole tablets (Mebex) are used for the
treatment of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm),
Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris
lumbricoides (common roundworm), Ancylostoma
duodenale (common hookworm), Necator
americanus (American hookworm) in single or
mixed infections. Mebendazole is a highly
effective, broad-spectrum antihelmintic.

Active Ingredient
The active pharmaceutical ingredient
present in Mebex tablets is
Mebendazole.
Each 100 mg tablet contains 100 mg of
the active ingredient Mebendazole.

Recommended Adult Dosage
The recommended adult dosage of Mebex
(Mebendazole Tablets) is given below:
➔Treatment of Pinworm Infection: Mebex Dosage
for treatment of pinworms is 100 mg taken once.
This dose is repeated two weeks later if the
infestation has not cleared up.
➔Treatment of Whipworm, Common Roundworm
and Hookworm Infections: Oral dosage for
treatment of whipworm, common roundworm and
hookworm in adults is 100 mg twice a day for 3
consecutive days.

Recommended Dosage
The recommended dosage of Mebex (
Mebendazole Tablets) for children is given
below:
➔Treatment of Whipworm, Common
Roundworm and Hookworm Infections:
Oral dosage for treatment of whipworm,
common roundworm and hookworm in
children more than 2 years of age and below
5 years of age and below 18 kg weight is one
100 mg tablet in the morning for three
consecutive days.

Contraindications
Mebendazole tablets (Mebex 100 mg) are
contraindicated in patients with the following
conditions:
➔Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any
inactive ingredient of this medication.
➔Use of Mebendazole in the treatment of children
under two years is contraindicated.

Side Effects of Mebex Tablets
The most common side effects of
Mebendazole tablets (Mebex) are
diarrhoea, vomiting, and/or
abdominal pain. Other side effects
reported were drowsiness, itching,
headache, and dizziness.

Warnings And Precautions
➔Patients should be informed of the potential risk to the
fetus in women taking Mebendazole tablets during
pregnancy, especially during the first trimester
➔Mebendazole has not been extensively studied in
children under two years; therefore, in the treatment of
children under two years the relative benefit/risk should be
considered.
➔Concurrent treatment with Cimetidine may inhibit the
metabolism of Mebendazole in the liver, resulting in
increased plasma concentrations, particularly during
prolonged treatment.

Warnings And Precautions
➔It is not known whether Mebendazole passes into
maternal milk and thus whether it is harmful to the
newborn. The use of Mebex tablets in nursing mothers
requires that anticipated benefits be weighed against
possible risks.
➔Periodic assessment of organ system functions, including
hematopoietic and hepatic, is advisable during prolonged
therapy.

Overdose Symptoms & Treatment
In the event of accidental overdosage,
abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting or
diarrhoea and gastrointestinal complaints
lasting up to a few hours may occur.
Vomiting and purging should be induced.
