NC Professional Development
                   Standards
STANDARDS-AT-A-GLANCE…
       The North Carolina professional
    development standards begin with the
premise that a primary goal of professional
development is to help educators develop the
    knowledge, skills, behavior, and insights
    needed to become effective classroom
teachers and school leaders in 21st Century
    Classrooms
2/10/11
The standards are organized according to the
          context/process/content schema:
• Context Standards (the organization, system, culture)
     – Learning Communities
     – Leadership
     – Resources
• Process Standards (the “how”)
     – Data Driven
     – Evaluation
     – Research-Based
     – Design
     – Learning
     – Collaboration
• Content Standards (the “what”)
     – Equity
     – Quality Teaching
     – Family Involvement

CEU Requirements
Renewal and Reinstatement Guidelines

During the 2011 session, the General Assembly reduced the
number of renewal credits required to renew a Standard
Professional 2 license from 15 to 7.5. As a result, the State
Board of Education approved the following requirements to
  renew the Standard Professional 2:

Professional Educators:
 1 renewal credit for literacy
 1 renewal credit for the specific academic subject area and
 5.5 general credits (as determined by the LEA, if employed), not to include
     years of experience

CEU Literacy Component - Literacy applies to all educators including Student Service Personnel and
is not meant to limit or restrict the renewal credit process. Students who are College and Career Ready
in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language (located in the ELA Common Core State
Standards, CCSS, page 7) defines and offers a portrait of a literate graduate. It is critical to note that
although the description is taken from the English Language Arts Common Core Standards, they are
applicable and taught to every student at every grade level, and all teachers and student service
personnel share in the development of literate graduates. Skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening,
and language undergird and are prerequisites for all forms of 21st century literacy, including:
· Informational Literacy
· Media Literacy
· Information, Media, and Technology Literacy
· Visual Literacy
· Civic Literacy
· Financial, Economic, and Entrepreneurial Literacy
· Health Literacy, and
· Environmental Literacy

This came form the StateBoard notes.

  • 12. THE DAILY NEWS www.dailynews.com THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER - Since 1879 New Requirements for Educators Associated Press… CEU Literacy Component - Literacy applies to all educators including Student Service Personnel and is not meant to limit or restrict the renewal credit process. Students who are College and Career Ready in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language (located in the ELA Common Core State Standards, CCSS, page 7) defines and offers a portrait of a literate graduate. It is critical to note that although the description is taken from the English Language Arts Common Core Standards, they are applicable and taught to every student at every grade level, and all teachers and student service personnel share in the development of literate graduates. Skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language undergird and are prerequisites for all forms of 21st century literacy, including: · Informational Literacy · Media Literacy · Information, Media, and Technology Literacy · Visual Literacy · Civic Literacy · Financial, Economic, and Entrepreneurial Literacy · Health Literacy, and · Environmental Literacy This came form the StateBoard notes.

  3. Lenoir County Public Schools - Federal Programs Meeting Tezella Cline - Professional Development - May 29, 2008 The NC Professional Development Standards state that the goal of Professional Development is to help educators in developing the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and insights needed to become effective teachers in the 21 st Century. The Instructional Effectiveness Team supports this premise and uses the NC Professional Development Standards and the 21 st Century Framework to guide district-level decisions concerning professional development for Lenoir County Public Schools. The Standards are organized according to Context Standards (the organization, system, culture), Process Standards (the how), and content Standards (the What)
  4. 5. Lenoir County Public Schools - Federal Programs Meeting Tezella Cline - Professional Development - May 29, 2008 Here you see the goals of HQ PD. We intend to support teachers, administrators and others so that they can positively impact student achievement and prepare students to be successful in the 21 st Century and beyond.
  6. Through research and active engagement in our District Leadership Team Professional Learning Community, (IET team) we are focusing our work and decisions about professional learning on what research says High Quality Professional Development should look like. This slide shows the characteristics of High-Quality Professional Development. Lenoir County Public Schools - Federal Programs Meeting Tezella Cline - Professional Development - May 29, 2008
  7. As you know there are many documents that have been developed to support the transition. One important one is the Standards document… The Common Core is made up of the English and Math Curriculum Standards.
  8. Lenoir County Public Schools - Federal Programs Meeting Tezella Cline - Professional Development - May 29, 2008 Today, we are faced with many changes. This visual shows the 21 st Century Skills Framework. Professional Development must now be focused in these areas for our educators. In addition to these skills, teachers have been trained on their new evaluation instrument . This instrument is based on the new North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards as well as the 21 st Century Framework. So, as you can see, with so many changes, supporting our teachers and others in High Quality Professional Development is more important now than ever before and professional development is what drives every other initiative. In order to be considered High Quality, PD experiences must be clearly designed to address student academic needs. It must engage teachers to a level that will allow them to return to their classrooms and infuse the new skills, knowledge, and tools into their curriculum. In addition, there must be meaningful follow up after the professional development experience. The training or experience must occur over an extended period of time (such as a full semester or a full year) rather than be a one-time event. Finally, we must strive to collect data to address how the training impacts student achievement.
  9. Along with the new focus on literacy and the graduation rate, comes additional requirements for educators.
  10. Workshops and trainings for teachers, administrators and others may be presented in various formats and locations. We participate in Out-of –district activities, District activities, webinars, and online courses and workshops… Our largest group of workshops fall under the category of “district activity”. In Lenoir County Public Schools, we use the SEA System. This is an internet -based system that allows us to organize, advertise and track workshops that we offer employees at the district level. This system also allows us to electronically send CEU data for teachers and others to our Human Resources Department for posting. In addition, this system also provides us with professional development data that we use for planning and evaluation of workshops. Here you can see a sample report. This is the Activities-at-a-Glance report which shows all of the activities for the year thus far. Currently this is a 12 page document. 11. We determine our PD based on information from a variety of sources. These Data Sources include: Student Test Data Surveys (principals, teachers (counselors, media specialists), Federal Programs, PD Surveys, Technology Surveys, SEA System Data) DPI Initiatives School Needs as indicated by principals and by teachers IET Recommendations Observation data AdvancED Recommendations Data from the surveys and from all of the other sources help to guide our decisions about PD. The Professional Development and Federal Survey for this year was sent out Feb. 3, so we are currently collecting data.
