Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge: Rethinking the Role of Technology in K-12 Classrooms Lara Ervin, M.A. Presented to San Jose State University Elementary Education Faculty January 24, 2011
Faculty Will Be Able To: Content Objectives: Language Objectives: Anonymously write ideas about how K-8 teachers should use technology in the classroom, to be shared aloud. View and reflect on a video about the 21st Century world. Participate in a presentation about the theory of TPACK. Work with a group, examining suggestions for ways to incorporate technology in content areas, discuss how these ideas could be used in courses taught in the department. Build knowledge about technology use in K-8 classrooms. Examine reasons for developing teacher candidate knowledge in use of technology in the classroom. Compare a theory for technology integration (TPACK) with own conceptions of how technology is used in the classroom. Determine possible applications for how technology could be integrated into courses taught in the department.
Agenda: Surfacing Assumptions Did You Know 2.0 TPACK Overview and Examples Small Group Discussion: Technology in Our Classrooms
Surfacing Assumptions (Part 1) At your table, you will find a large index card. DO NOT write your name on it. Consider what role you believe technology plays in K-8 classrooms. Write one sentence about how you think technology should be used in K-8 classrooms. When you are finished, give Lara your card.
Surfacing Assumptions (Part 2) Lara will pass back cards randomly. Please let her know if you have your own card. We will verbally share out the sentence written on our card. Please pause after each person reads to consider what was read.
As we watch the following video from TeacherTube.com*, consider the implications for K-8 classrooms * If there is time and interest at the end of the presentation, I will show you TeacherTube.
Did You Know? On this slide, link either 2.0: http://www1.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=3051&title=Did_You_Know__2_0 Or 3.0 : http://www1.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=118898&title=Did_You_Know_3_0 Based on what you think your audience would connect with.
Revisit the Index Card On the card in front of you, add one sentence on either of the following: What idea, fact or concept struck you the most? What do you think the implications of this video are for K-8 teachers?
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge: An Overview Theory: Harris, Mishra and Koehler, 2004 Reframed, 2009
Essentials of the Theory Based on Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge Theory (1986) Not a technocentric theory Considers multiple definitions of “technology”
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Koehler & Mishra 2008)
Technology as a Tool Within the theory, technology is never the centerpiece of the lesson plan. Planning with TPACK: What is your objective? What content considerations do you have? What is a pedagogically appropriate approach? What is the best tool for your lesson?
Student Creation from 103: Students were instructed to create a video about culture in the classroom based on what we learned in class. Students were creating and analyzing key ideas. Example
Revisit the Index Card How might the TPACK theory impact your ideas around what technology should look like in K-8 classrooms? Or… What are your reactions or ideas about the theory?
Group Examination of TPACK Select 2 or 3 colleagues with whom you share topics or content. (i.e. teaching assignment or content area) Review the Activity Type charts in the packet. Which would be appropriate for your content? Which might you like to try?

Table 2: Convergent Knowledge Expression Activity Types
Table 3: Written Divergent Knowledge Expression Activity Types
Next Steps…. On the index card in front of you, please let us know… What direction you would like this discussion to take as a group/department. What you personally would like to do as a next step in exploring technology in the classroom. This entry will NOT be read to the group. Please include your name if you want personal assistance.
Thank You for your participation! If you should have any questions, comments, concerns or coffee… please feel free to email me! teacherlara247@gmail.com
