It’s not your imagination. Your hair is faling out. In the shower, you pull out a clump of hair. More and more strands come
out. You think you have it all but then you go to brush your hair and more comes out. You think you must have gotten it
all this time but no. You fix up some breakfast and you feel something on the back of your arm. More hair falling out. Or
if you’re a guy, you look down and notice hair falling out in your hands.
This. Is. A. Common. Problem.
Why is this happening?
A lot of jaw surgery patients will notice 2 to 3 months after surgery their hair falling out. In clumps. Some people will say
it’s because of the anesthesia. Some say that it’s because of the trauma from surgery. But you know what? It’s
something else.
According to a board-certified hair restoration physician, we have control over our hairline. And we’re talking food. Yes,
it’s the fridge.
Just like any part of the body, the hair needs a variety of nutrients to grow and be healthy. Because nutrients go to
essential tissues first (like our muscles and bones), the hair gets left behind on the tier of essential parts of the body. For
a healthy head of hair, it’s important to get a variety of nutrients into the body.
So, which foods can help?
Oh, the usual good stuff like Omega-3 fatty acids that can add elasticity to hair and prevent hair from breaking off in the
shower. Foods to consider: Flaxseeds, Walnuts, Salmon, Kale.
Zinc is another good one. Zinc helps boost tissue growth and repair. Ding ding. We’ve got a winner! We need a lot of
that. It also helps regular hormones and maintain production of oil-secreting glends to help hair grow on the scalp. Foods
to eat: Chickpeas, beef, wheat germ.

Protein. Yes, hair is pretty much made out of pure protein. Foods to eat: Greek yogurt, egg yolks, kale, peanuts
Iron. Iron helps deliver blood to the body’s cells. And during surgery, we can lose a lot of blood. It’s important to ramp up
your iron levels with dark leafy green, beans, red meat, and egg yolks.
The Vitamins. Vitamin A & C contribute to the production of sebum. It’s nature’s hair conditioner and can keep your hair
from breaking off. You can take a vitamin supplement or eat spinach, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.
Need some more ideas? Here are a list of great recipes that can help you keep you beautiful head of hair.

A flair up with your skin can be expected after surgery. Your face will blow up like a balloon and oil production will increase
to help lubricate the stetched skin. You may get some pimples but there are quite a few that may deveop into cystic acne.
Ouch – this type of acne can hurt not just physically but emotionally. Pay close attention.
Here are 7 simple steps to dealing with acne FAST.
1) Stop eating foods that are causing your cystic acne. That includes less sugary foods, soy, dairy and cheese.
2) Stop stressing. Stress causes the flair ups to get worse. Minimize your stress through deep breathing exercises.
3) Keep your skin clean. There are products to control oil production (Hydrogen Peroxide products).
4) Drink 8 to 10 glasses of filtered water every day. This will be hard after jaw surgery but make it a goal to drink as much
as you can. It moves the acids out of your body and help with healing.
5) Eat foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Foods include: walnuts, beans and flaxseed oil.
6) Supplement with zinc and B vitamins. This will help with digestion and flushing out toxins trapped in your body.
7) Choosing all-natural vs processed foods. This will help your body minimize the amount of toxins in the body.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can be sneaky and harmful. Why? A lack of this vitamin can lead to depression, memory loss, the
efficiency at which our body grows red blood cells, nerves and carry out other functionalities of the body. It’s a vitamin that
can’t be made within the body but instead come from supplements or better yet, nutritious foods.
Where can you find B12? B12 can’t be found in plants. It’s only found in meat products, like eggs, meat, dairy and poultry.

Depression is a surprising obstacle that many jaw surgery patients encounter. The swelling from the surgery leaves you in a
an uncomfortable situation. You can’t breathe. Your skin is stretched, itchy and tight. You can’t sleep because sleeping
upright is not natural (and honestly not comfortable at all!) Your nights become sleepless and you can’t eat. It’s a recipe for
disaster as far as mental state. Most patients undergo a difficult time around Day 3 where swelling is at it’s most. Swelling
will typically start to get better after that, but the other issues will stay around for just a bit longer.
So what’s happening here? You are in an undesirable state and not getting the best nutrients to help restore your body’s
depleted stores. Your body is not only trying to support repair, but as well as growth and wellness. Any deficiency can keep
your body from normally functioning and increase chances of depression. Eating simple carbs won’t be the best choice
because they can flood your body with insulin and drop you further in the hole. Try some of these foods to help: apricots,
carrots, collards, blueberries, kiwi, wheat germ, nuts and seeds, sweet potato, protein, beans and peas, low-fat dairy
products, whole grains and seafood.
