- With this in mind we know that economic success depends on how effectively we apply human brain power to the task of innovation. What are the skills that will prepare our children for success in this innovation-driven world? A fundamental shift is needed in how we approach education worldwide in order to equip students with the skills they need for today and tomorrow. The advent of new technology continues to affects how we live, work, play and learn. This constant innovation creates the need for students to gain new skills that will help them adapt and thrive in this digital era. Literacy, strong communications skills, and a solid grasp of math and science are still essential. But to truly thrive, students need:Sophisticated and flexible skills for problem solving, collaboration, and communication. They need to use information technology to find and evaluate information. They will have to adapt quickly to change and see learning as a lifelong pursuit. As a technology company whose future is dependent upon the effectiveness of the 21st Century workforce, and who are currently engaged on education work in many countries where we are also prospective employers, we feel an obligation to invest in this work and help governments tackle their biggest challenges in nurturing students to have these skills.
- ATC21S is a multi-stakeholder partnership made up of governments, research institutions and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), who are creating new 21st-century assessment, teaching and curriculum framework to help students develop the skills required to be successful in the 21st century workplace. To truly understand if 21st century skills could be internationally defined and to better understand how language and culture influences how these skills are taught required engagement of national governments and experts from around the world. Six founder countries joined ATC21S: Australia, Finland, Portugal, Singapore, UK and the USA. These countries were selected based on national education quality, technological advancement in education, geographic and cultural diversity, and experience in international cooperation in education. To really span multiple languages and cultures three associate countries joined the project this year and will participate in the trails phase of the project: Costa Rica, Russia and Japan. The project is composed of five phases: conceptual whitepapers, cognitive labs and coding, pilots developing assessments for two skills spanning the four areas, large scale trails and lastly dissemination of the assessments and teaching approaches in the late Summer of 2010 in a form of a country resource toolkit that will be placed in the public domain to help others replicate the work of the project. To date the project has Project conceptually defined internationally 21st century skills while engaging over 250 researchers developing white papers that not only define, but look at the methodical issues, technical challenges with computer based assessments, classroom and formative evaluation and policy frameworks needed to implement new assessments. The project has now moved from conceptual to practical by taking two skills that span the four areas: Collaborative Problem Solving: refers to working together on a task or problem to solve a common goal. This involves the contribution and/or exchange of ideas, knowledge or resources to achieve the goal. ICT Literacy: Learning in Digital Networks: encompasses social networking, information communication literacy, technological awareness, and simulation. Each of these elements are enabling skills in how individuals function as consumers or producers in social networks, and how they contribute to the development of social and intellectual capital. And is currently building formative and summative assessments and teaching interventions for these skills being tested in the countries in cognitive labs and pilots. - This year, Santee School District is excited to introduce a new technology, "Cloud Computing", for students in grades 3 - 8. Cloud Computing allows students to access their resources, such as word processing and collaboration tools, as well as their documents over the Internet.
- The Santee Cloud Computing delivers an alternative solution to 1-to-1 Computing. Rather than focusing on the computer hardware, the "One-to-One Access" concept provide students (in grade 3 - 8) the ability to access their educational applications and documents from anywhere, using any computing device.Extending Education Beyond the ClassroomThe "Cloud Computing" technology is an entirely web-enabled computing system. Although the computing environment resides within the District technology boundary, the web-based cloud technology delivers technology services beyond the classroom computers and directly to the students, no matter where they are. This opens the possibilities of "extending education beyond the classroom".

They wanted to improve the way they conducted Year 8 science tests to replicate what students did in the laboratory and believed interactive online science testing could test a wider range of skills than just pure scientific knowledge. However, DET estimated for them to host an online test for 65,000 students simultaneously would require a A$200,000 investment in server infrastructure. With the help of their partner, Janison Solutions, DET launched its Essential School Science Assessment (ESSA) online exam. In 2010, they trialled an online science exam hosted by Microsoft Azure that went out to 65,000 students in 650 schools simultaneously.
