3. Global challenges ahead
» Poverty Crisis – 4.5 billion people out of 6.5 live in poverty. Could this
imbalance over time result in a global security crisis
» Resource Crisis - Year 2050 equals 9.0 billion people on Mother Earth. We
have limited resources, water is one of them (Too much / Too little / Too
polluted)
» Climate Crisis – Limited resources in the developing world to deal with
climate change, serious drought in certain regions (Africa)
» Food Crisis – lack of access to water – less food production – higher prices -
the poor becomes even more poor.

8. Sustainability
LIFELINK systems are sustainable on three different levels:
» Environmentally (all systems operate mainly on solar energy or other
sustainable energy sources)
» Financially (various degrees of financial sustainability depending on the
users’ capability paying for the water they tap)
» Socially (the LIFELINK solution creates value in a rural community and
enables people to start or expand businesses, improve health conditions
and create employment.
14. Donations
Donations by NGO’s, companies,
foundations or governments:
» No loan received (system
donated)
» Minimum sustainability by paying
a water tariff, sufficient to sustain
future service and spare parts
15. Semi-commercial funding
Semi-commercial funding by World
Bank programs, regional development
banks or governments:
» Partly repayment of loan
(varying interest rate and
repayment period)
» Down payment paid by donor
or government
» Reduction of loan amount based
on performance indicators
16. Commercial funding
Commercial funding by commercial
banks and social venture funds:
» Full repayment of loan
» Interest rate and repayment
period to vary according to the
funder’s conditions
18. Learning’s
1. Working the BOP market, making serious impact = ”getting your hands
dirty”
2. Do not count on the NGO’s, UN, etc. to save your business
3. Not too much market research – learn from various pilots (different end-user
profiles)
4. Increase impact / reduce risk through partnerships
5. Business models – still looking for the “one size fits all”
6. Eliminate corruption through technology– Easier said than done – but
necessary for success.
