These are examples of people and organizations on twitter that can help you gain knowledge and influence in particular topic areas. You could follow anyone – but don’t. Refer back to the objectives you wrote. Make sure the folks that you are following are associated with your objectives.
News – provide your followers with the latest news on your key areas of thought leadership. To do this, consider building a reading list just outside of the mainstream. Sure it is fine to included links to New York Times stories, but a lot of your followers may already be aware of that story. Look for industry journals and vertical publications that pickup trends before mainstream media. Then think like a writer, come up with a catchy title and tweet out the story link. The rules of good in person conversation apply. Show interest, be polite, be helpful. In fact a key factor of your Twitter experience should be to give more than you get (as in all social media interactions).
Browse through some Twitter profiles. You’ll quickly see that some are more engaging than others. Create a short profile that is an authentic representation of you – make sure to include your company name, but also include some personal detail. To update your profile – look at the menu to the top right. Choose Settings, Profile Make sure to use your own photo! According to a Hubspot survey, profiles with headshots have 10X more followers
Your Backstory: When people are deciding to follow someone new, they look at their bio, the ratio of followers to following and the person’s last 4 or 5 tweets. Since you are new to Twitter, you’re starting with a blank page. Put thought into the story that you want to tell. Tweet that out via 4 or 5 posts before you start to follow people. Ratio: This is important to consider while you are trying to build a good follower base. For example, people are inclined to be suspicious of accounts that are following 200 people but only have 3 people following them. As you start out try to keep the follower and following number with in about 10 digits until you get to the hundreds. Then you can let that gap get a bit larger, but still try and keep it about 25 or 30 digits apart.
