It can be structured in 3 layers:In the middle there is the Application level: Software that can be developed in-house or by many different vendors. Those applications can be installed on premises or hosted in the Cloud like SalesForce and others.These applications rely on data that can be seen at the lower level. They can be stores in many different heterogeneous formats like relational databases, flat files, XML databases…Finally, on the top layer the employees of the company exchange information between them and interact with the different applications. These 2 types of exchange follow a process that is too rarely formalized.
- Purpose of the slide:Present the first big change in the Integration Market: CONVERGENCEDescribe the data integration layerRemember, this is not (yet) about Talend solutions, this is about changes in the market that will impact the prospect’s company, no matter what.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Talking points:It is necessary at the data layer to connect the different heterogeneous systems either for batch exchanges or for real-time synchronization. Those connections remove the burden of re-keying the data (which is prone to create errors) and allow smoother and faster flow of data exchange Operational Integration).The formats being heterogeneous, it’s always necessary to transform and enrich the data on the fly in a process that can be complex. Most of the time, the direct access to the data of the hosted applications is not allowed. The data storage is a black box. However the vendors of these hosted applications offer ways to access their data through their API.The frequency of synchronization between those systems can be very different, from once a day to thousand times per second for real-time applications.Data Integration cannot be successful without data qualityThe level of quality of the data is also very variable from one system to the other. It’s very frequent to find obsolete, incomplete or wrong data. There are also duplicates, bad formats (like for emails or phone #), etc. Moving data without fixing, improving, and enriching the data flowing between applications and data stores does not solve the problem faced in enterprises. Designing data flows and transformations between systems need to incorporate the cleansing of data, otherwise injecting poor quality data into a DWH or applications results in poor decision making (garbage in, garbage out), and lower productivity.
- Purpose of the slide:Present the first big change in the Integration Market: CONVERGENCEDescribe the Application integration layerRemember, this is not (yet) about Talend solutions, this is about changes in the market that will impact the prospect’s company, no matter what.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Talking points:The different systems can also be connected at the Application layer level using an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). When an ESB is in place any application can connect to it by exposing the incoming and outgoing message formats as services.The applications can then exchange data with others by sending messages to the bus. The applications that have subscribed to the publisher automatically receive those messages and can process them.This architecture masks the different technologies or locations of the applications. An application can be replaced by another one in a transparent manner respect the same “contract” i.e. the same format for the incoming and outgoing messages.ESB is the solution of choice for very high frequency exchanges and/or if the need for security is critical. It is also recommended to cover exchanges within the “extended company”: from headquarter to subsidiaries, customers and suppliers.

Their interaction is controlled by different processes although they are rarely formalized.Auditing and describing these processes and the actors (whether people or systems), their roles and their rights is an important step to better understand the information flow within the company. It’s a necessary step before to start any business or system optimization.Once formalized, part or all the process can be automatized. By connecting the ESB directly to the data layer it is possible to quickly improve the whole process and make it more reliable. Improvement at the process level has positive impact on all parts of the company especially regarding the responsiveness and the quality of the decision making process.

Processing of data needs to be cost effective by leveraging and optimizing an organization’s full IT infrastructure (ELT for example) AND/OR external cloud platforms to take advantage of elasticity.New technologies for Big Data like NoSQL or Hadoop are not compatible with existing DatabasesIn the last 10-15 years companies have made massive investments in DW and relational databases that are not compatible with the Big Data technologies.
