The second Monday in October marks Columbus
Day and American Indian Day.
Not all states celebrate American Indian Day. They
may celebrate Columbus Day instead.
Other states call it Native American Day or
Indigenous People Day like they do in South Dakota
and Berkeley , California.
4. Facts
On American Indian Day Indians celebrate by having
pow -wows.
A Pow- wow is a gathering of North America’s Native
people where they meet to dance ,sing ,and honor
American Indian culture .
5. In 1989 South Dakota passed legislature to
proclaim 1990 the “year of Reconciliation “for
Native Americans and to change Columbus Day to
Native American Day .
