1. From Athlete and Scientist to
Industry:
What’s wrong with the current
paradigm in Sports Nutrition
Stacy T Sims, PhD
2. BRIEF STORY
Elite athlete struggling with fluid balance and nutrition on
Worlds Course (early 2000s)
PhD focus on fluid balance, sex differences, and separation
of fuel from hydration (2002)
Teammates in the field- separation of fluid from food:
tailored macronutrient-carbohydrate intake from real food
WITH fluid that works with physiology to hydrate (2002
onwards)
Pro and Olympic athlete consults to help with GI
issues, cramping, power decline-> separation of fluid from
fueling (2005 onwards)
Concurrent lab research with field implementation to hone
in specificity
3. EVOLUTION FROM CONSULTANT TO INDUSTRY
2009: specific problem for TdFrance team
GI distress, dehydration, lack of recovery
Created solution of hydration vs fueling; tailored recovery
(Acute and nightime)
Private client offered to help bring the solution to the
masses
2012 (May) Launched OSMO: Hydration in the
bottle, Food in the Pocket.
You’re not Bonking, You’re Dehydrated!
Too much focus on calorie and exogenous carbohydrate, not
enough on keeping blood volume up for essential circulation
4. GOING FROM ONE TO THE MASSES
The “haters” are a louder voice
Palatability
Pushing the paradigm shift
Real science- marketing science is often louder and
harder to “push back”
WADA
FDA
5. NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS OR REAL FOOD
We are not as smart as Nature.
Supplementation should not be the answer, REAL
FOOD is better
Physiology is inherently the same; different between
men and women- compounded by menstrual cycle
hormones, and alterations in energy metabolism
during exercise.
6. PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT
Ergogenic Aids: line between natural and illegal
Top 2% is often misappropriated nutritional strategies
Working with physiology and applied sciences for longer
term performance gains and health
Specificity of training is best
Natural manipulation takes longer, but very effective
Globalization of “immediate”
